Great way to take your mind off things ... love the the way this tut' points the way to versatility.  I've lost count of how many times I've done this

Ahhh total fail ... not as easy as I thought.  Lines too defined.  To quote my wife - "it doesn't look like one, but I'd still eat it" 😁

Concerning the lines; on the 'outline layer' have you tried selecting the outside of the object, inverting, and using @TrevorOutlaw's BlurBlend?

I love that plugin. It might do the trick!
