Windows 7 Platform Update

Lately, I have been prompted by Paint.NET to install a "platform update" in order to install the latest version of Paint.NET. When I then attempt to do this, after having downloaded the two required files, I click on the first of these to install it and it opens the "Windows Standalone Installer," which does nothing but display the words, "Searching for updates on this computer," accompanied by a Cancel button. The search goes on endlessly without result and I'm sure that, if my laptop could run forever, that's how long the search would continue. Clicking the Cancel button does absolutely nothing and the only way I can get the "Windows Standalone Installer" to cease operation is by shutting down my laptop. Thus, after five or six attempts to install this "platform update" and, thus, the latest Paint.NET update, I give up! There simply is no way to do it.

You only need to download one of the two files. One is 32-bit, and the other one is 64-bit. Choose the one that matches your operating system.

You can install this with Windows Update.

 

You really should make sure automatic updates are enabled -- this should've been automatically installed 5 years ago.

same thing just started happening to me after years of using paint.net

i did delete some of the windows snooping updates they snuck in,

maybe that was it

 

now paint.net refuses to open anymore

what exactly is in sp1 that paint.net needs that photoshop/illustrator/gimp/coreldraw/xara/serif/photofiltre/etc. don't need?

 

the last thing you should tell people to do is have automatic updates on

You couldn't be more wrong.

 

Critical updates are critical for a reason--most patch security vulnerabilities.

 

Please, please keep your OS updated!

No, the Platform update was release several years before the Telemetry updates.

Paint.net uses the Direct2D and DXGI technology stack. Many other image programs have implemented their own bespoke graphical stacks.

Since paint.net is developed by one person, creating everything from the ground up is not feasible. Thus, the existing technologies in Windows are used.

Direct2D and DXGI were significantly upgraded in the Platform Update.

Look, if you're not willing to install updates then you shouldn't assume things will keep working or be even be safe. That's just the modern reality of software.

 

And if you don't trust Paint.NET enough to enable its updater, then you just shouldn't be using Paint.NET. And that applies for other software as well.
