I'm fairly new to Paint.net, so that may be part of the problem, lol. But here's what's happening:
I'm trying to create an ebook cover. I have several layers.
I want to put a glow around my text. And this is where I''m running into trouble.
I unselected all the layers except two with text. I'm trying to re-color using the recolor tool.
But everytime I drag the circle over the text, it affects the background layer by drawing a path of that color on it.
The background layer is NOT CHECKED. i.e. not selected. But it's drawing on it as if it is.
How can I make it stop?
I'm assuming there's some function I'm missing but I sure can't find it.
Thanks for helping, If you can. :unimpressed:

You may be confused as to the active layer and what the checkbox means. The checkboxes will turn rendered layers on and off and does not affect whether you can draw in them or not. The currently selected layer (highlighted in blue) is the layer that you are currently interacting with, draw on, etc. regardless of whether the check is selected or not.

Hello @Meenie50 I'm not sure if you mean the Background of the text layer, or the Background of the layers windows.  In case it's the former, it may be you are not 'selecting' the text correctly.  Also, you don't really need the Re-color Tool for the Glow.  Here is a quick video of how you can do it another way.

BINGO!! I didn't know to look for a highlight! I thought the checkmark was what designated the layer that was being worked on. THANK you!!! :)

Thanks, @Pixey!
By background, I'm referring to the layer that my background color is on. And what they said above was correct, I didn't realize I had to look for a highlighted layer, lol. Just thought when you unchecked a layer, it was out of the equation for the time being. :)
Does this video have sound? I can't hear anything.
Maybe I can slow it down so I can follow the bouncing cursor, lol.
