saving photos

It doe's not appear from the information that you provided that you are using Paint.NET in accomplishing your photo saving task. More information is needed to assist you. (Where are these photos coming from? How are you capturing these images? Are you attempting to copy an image from one location and saving it to another location?)

Hello @nicovdh and Welcome to Paint.net :)  As @HrRez says, it's not easy to know what you mean. 


If it's this: 


1.  You took a screen shot of a photo on a webpage, then do this;

2.  Open Paint.net and go to Edit > Paste

3.  Choose Expand canvas

4.  Use the Rectangle Select :RectangleSelectTool: Tool to select around the picture and then use Image > Crop to Selection :ImageCrop:

5.  Then go to File > Save As :FileSaveAs: and go to the bottom drop down box and choose .png or .jpeg.

Are you using the keyboard key "Print Screen" in some way?
