No automatic antialiasing?

Recommended Posts

In other graphics apps, I could paste an image into a new layer, select and delete the background around it, and the app automatically antialiased its edges to the layer(s) beneath it:

When I do this with Paint.net, it doesn't AA the edges:

I must then run the Eraser tool along all the edges to AA them. This takes a lot of extra time (mostly to avoid erasing more of the image than I want to).

Was this intentional? Is there any way to make PN AA such cuts automatically? I can't be the only PN user who wants this. Thanks!

Are you sure you have antialiased selections enabled?

There's a Follow button at the top of the page.

(September 25th, 2023)  Sorry about any broken images in my posts. I am aware of the issue.

Yup, it's enabled.

Actually, when you make a selection—let's say, with the Lasso tool—then delete it, PN does antialias to a small extent:

But the eraser tool really antialiases:

I can make very accurate selections using the Magic Wand, Lasso and other tools, but they leave such sharp edges, they're not very useful this way. It'd be awesome if they could have the same AA quality as the Eraser. Or am I overlooking some logical reason that they don't? Couldn't it at least be an option?

Because other Apps do, what YOU want automatically, that doesn't means that this is a good idea. What, if someone NOT want antialised edges? I prefer applications, that doesn't do to much automatically. I want to decide.

Beside AA's Assistant Tweak Transparency V2 is my favorite choice to soften the edges.

Check your Profile and the Notification Settings.

The Magic Wand tool doesn't do feathering (the selections it creates are always "pixelated"). It's a limitation that goes to the very bone of complexity, performance, and even feasibility.

I must agree. It's a limitation of PN I've never understood.

Well maybe now you understand it a little. It's not a simple thing. It's not like it was left out because of priorities or even laziness. It was just really damn complicated, and really damn slow. Maybe in another generation it'll be feasible to tackle this.
