paint.net 4.0.20 beta build 6560

Recommended Posts

Direct download link: removed; go here instead for the newer build: https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/112169-paintnet-4020-beta-build-6568/

Note that this is not available via the built-in updater, nor is there a Windows Store build for this. I'm trying to get this wrapped up really fast, and both of those take a lot of time to publish through. (yes of course the final/non-beta will be published normally :) )

This update has some really useful stuff in it, most notably a Dark Theme and greatly improved High DPI support

High DPI has generally worked well in Paint.NET, but in the last year or two it's become apparent that "not being totally broken" isn't a high enough bar to meet. So, I've fixed and improved a whole bunch of things. Whether it was longstanding issues that've been reported (e.g. Levels), things that nobody reported but that were completely broken (Save Palettes), or adopting to a world where 4K and 200% scaling (aka 192 DPI) are common, I've tried to nip and tuck just about everything I could find.

Dark Theme support is brand new, and took a ton of time to get right. On Windows 10, as long as you leave Paint.NET's Color Scheme setting to "Default", the app will automatically switch between Light and Dark based on the Windows 10 setting (go to Start -> search for "Theme" -> scroll to the bottom of that page). On Windows 7 and 8.1, you can choose Light or Dark in the Paint.NET settings dialog. Dark Theme will not work if you're using "Classic" theme in Windows 7.

Also, as per this blog post, Paint.NET now uses .NET 4.7 and Windows 8 is no longer supported.

As many of you know, Paint.NET is based on Windows Forms, which is a UI framework that dates back to 2002. And it's mostly a wrapper around ye ol' Win32 UI, which goes back more than a decade farther. And, boy, these UI frameworks are not very good with things like theming or high DPI. They try ... and fail in so many ways, and it takes a ton of nit-picky OCD work to find and fix all sorts of tiny issues that come up when attempting a project like this. I think the long-term solution will be to redo Paint.NET's UI in a totally new framework, probably a custom one, but that's a ways off (there's more important stuff to do first). For now, we still get Dark Theme and improved High DPI! Wubba lubba dub dub!

This screenshot (click for full size) shows off both the improved high DPI support (thicker highlight outlines, less claustrophobic toolbars), and the new Dark Theme:

One thing to note about the Dark Theme on Windows 10 is that you also have to configure the title bar "accent colors" to get the full effect. Otherwise the title bar will still be a blindingly bright white.

1) Enable Dark Theme in the Windows 10 "Colors" Settings

2) Enable "Show accent color on the following surface" -> "Title bars"

3) Under "Windows colors", choose a dark grey color. I personally like "Gray dark".

The link in Settings to the Windows coloring options is a nice touch. Thanks Rick!

Darkness falls across the land.

Thanks for spending the time getting a Dark theme working. Much appreciated.

If anyone wants a Beta of the Plugin Browser that can inherit the Dark Theme, here it is....

Oh, good point. This beta was built before I uploaded the changes to Crowdin. So any changes there won't be seen until the next build is released.

Its a shame that you didn't upload this as a beta for the windows store...

I feel mildly annoyed that the version I paid for is inferior to the free version.

Beta versions are not supposed to be used for production work. They often contain bugs.

Rick released this version to root out any bugs before publishing it to a wider audience. Use at your own risk.

Yes which is why I would have liked to download it via a windows store beta rather than having to download a separate version just to test the beta...

Also this actually fixes many of the interface bugs I have been dealing with on my 4k laptop. So this is exactly what I should use for production as it will let me work more effectively.

Oh right... But It's still "Dark" in English even with Russian UI. Is it coz of beta? Does release will be translated well?

hooddy, I have made offers on translation into Russian in 4 hours after the publication of release. Visit more often to crowdin and use function of search there at any changes.

@Rick Brewster Pretty sure I found one.

In rotate/zoom - when I try to enter my dimensions manually - they become superimposed (backwards). Pretty sure I used to be able to enter 45 with no problem.420bug.png.e2d4b04e58c8be8c3e8a3c32b960b09f.png

I tested it in other plugins and when the field is highlighted it works correctly.
