PNG Lossless Compression vs. BMP Lossless

Recommended Posts

Just a quirk that I noticed: Here i give the same two files, one in bitmap and one in PNG format. Now i noticed this in IE6's internal PNG viewer, but if one were to take a snapshot of the IE page, one would notice a slight discoloration between the two "same" colors in the two images. e.g., #FF33CC in the BMP might be #FF30CD in the PNG, while in PdN, they are the same (#FF33CC).

Here are the 2 images:

BMP:

color.bmp

PNG:

color.png

I have not dug too deeply, but in cases where I use html and need png for with its size it is easy to download, I need that the color of the png go with the background or something else.

Ok but if you load the PNG in Paint.NET, what is the color value?

If the color value is correct in Paint.NET, then IE is just rendering it wrong. Heck, it renders the Paint.NET logo with the wrong gamma (it looks darker), so this wouldn't surprise me at all.
