The linked Guardian article mentions PDN:

The most recent version of Paint for Windows 7 and later was much improved, but still considered feature poor compared to other free alternatives such as the third-party Paint.NET.

I had to laugh a lot when I read yesterday in a forum the serious question, if there would be any useful substitute for Paint. The young people are so haphazard nowadays ...

I have been using PDN  now far more than MS Paint but I disagree with such a move even though I'm still on Windows 7 and not Windows 10. Learn MS Paint and you can still do some good stuff with it. I was an MS Paint hero before my introduction to PDN so I have sentimental concerns about this.

Think about it, you are on Windows 10 that now came with the new update, you are offline, you cannot download other image editors from any online stores of some sort and all you need was to paste and save a screenshot frm your clipboard or crop an image. You got stuck because MS Paint is no longer there. How terribly inconvenient.

Its now one of those things that I wish MS hadn't removed like Windows Media Center, Windows Movie Maker and the graphical method of creating an adhoc network that was last seen on Windows 7. The Start Menu and Start button were as well but backlashed on MS so they had to put those two back.

It's not really being removed or retired. It's simply moving to the Windows Store and being put into maintenance mode.

Does that mean they're only going to do bug fixes for it?  If so, what sort of features were they adding before?

Hello @david.atwell

Pleased to meet you. Thought you were long gone.

In my opinion only;

WIN10 came with paint but also Paint3D. Instead of upgrading Paint they started from the ground floor designing Paint3D.

Paint will be removed during the WIN10 Creators update this fall. This I have seen in writing.

Paint3D is the path Microsoft is following to mimic Paint.Net / Photoshop / Illustrator / Gimp / Sketchup to name a few

Microsoft has a history of building 3rd party apps into their operating system.

Although Paint3D is new - what will it look like in 2 - 3 years? At this time you can't add plugins but you can access the windows warehouse to acquire 3D Objects. Users are being asked to create more 3D Objects for the warehouse. It comes with some default filters but still has no ability to add any more.

The time will come when we will be on WIN12. What will that look like? Just a few thoughts on the matter.

I'm sure @Rick Brewster has a better insight into what the future may hold. B)

The reports of my departure are greatly exaggerated.  :D

Nice to meet you too.  I'm not long gone; just working hard on three personal projects.  One is a website, and two are children.  :P  Which gives me precious little time to moderate, sadly.

I'd say I'm back forever, but who can predict such things?  I can say I have a bit more margin now.

Hello @Daikun

Just for everyone's info - after trying repeatedly to update to the Fall Creator's edition, Microsoft finally released a different update to resolve whatever issue I was having to complete the Fall Creator's update. The update was KB4053580. Now the only update it shows me is the Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709

Much to my surprise your theory of Paint being removed is incorrect. It is still here in the new and I must say latest update.
