Photobucket sucks.

I have some hosting room and bandwidth with in-motion I could donate.

That is very generous of you. Thank you. I'm seriously considering throwing together my own server to do my own hosting. I have an old XP box lying around which could be repurposed.

You will, of course keep your own backups now I assume.

Absolutely!

:arrow-up: Now that's very interesting @MadJik.  I thought I'd found a hack (from a website to get around the blocked images) but I couldn't get it to work.  I wIll give this a try.  Thank you :star:.

found that the thumbnails image are still available, just add "th_" before the name of the picture.

I wonder if there's any way this change could be made site-wide, with a script. (Though I also wonder how long this will last, before Photobucket shuts it down.)

EDIT: Naturally, running such a script would need to be dome by someone with administrative privileges on the site. I know almost nothing about site administration, so I have no idea if anyone has such direct access to the site files.

I have found 2 alternatives to Photobucket, imgur, flickr, & tinypic (which photobucket now owns it.)

NickPic Host is a good one: nickpic.host/

This image host allows hotlinking.. aka 3rd party hosting.

Another image host is:
village.photos/

This image host also allows hotlinking.. aka 3rd party hosting.

Beginning this week, I hope to begin replacing my PhotoBucket images on the site. I have a question. Is there any way to do a search to find all my images that need to be replaced?

You will have to re-visit all the threads in which you participated, me thinks :/.  If you want  images replacing in the Comps, you can give the new code to the Competition Hosts.

I will have to do something soon, also.  All my images are on Photobucket.  Hosting service or buy my own server??

I don't know what to do!

I know a server has initial investment upfront and I've looked at a couple decent ones.  I could probably figure out how to hook it up.  I'm sketchy on the software.  Most servers come with empty bays, so I would have to buy (2) NAS drives (I was looking at 2 bay servers).  I hear most server software is Linux.  After the initial investment, is there any more cost involved??

I also found a couple of hosting sites that are way cheaper than Photobucket's $399/year, and they give you a domain name.  This is not my area of expertise.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It would be helpful if comments could be easily edited in HTML form. As MadJuik's mentions above, thumbnails from PB still seem to work (at least for now). As a quick, temporary fix, I'd like to change all my image links to thumbnail links, so at least the general appearance of the image could be seen. I tried some things with Inspect Element and its Edit as HTML option, but so far haven't found away to make the edit stick when saving the edited comment. That's not that convenient a method of editing the HTML even if it worked.

I'll ask again a question I asked above: is there any way a script could be run on the site's files so that all the PhotoBucket links are replaced by links to the thumbnails? I'd be willing to write the script (though I haven't written a Perl script in ages).

You can revive the Thumb image (but it won't be clickable to a larger image) as @MadJik described.  He said to use 'inspect' but I found it's best to:

Right click on the nasty blocked photo bucket image and use "Copy Image Address".

This is from your Recolor Using Palette Thread:

Add the:  th_ after the last slash in the code to get this:

The path to your personal PB folder(s) should be consistent, so use the URL of one of your hostage images. Paste that into the Custom paint.net search engine  http://searchpaint.net/

Remember to truncate the URL to remove the actual filename or you will find just that file ;)

Okay so guys, I talked to my husband. One of his hobbies is maintaining a media archive/server, so he's got lots of info and ideas. He's going to be making an account so y'all can brainstorm. (He also uses PDN to polish and create the images for his archive, so....) :)

Thank you Pixey. I still wish the forum had "display as HTML" similar to the way the previous forum allowed showing BB codes. It'd make it much easier to update the links. For some reason, right-clicking to get the address only works when the comment isn't open for editing. I suppose I can get the addresses using "Inspect Element" for comments containing multiple images.

Thank you,  Ego Eram Reputo, for the very useful suggestion. I wish it went to individual comments instead of the thread page, but it's certainly much better than having to remember all the threads that contain my images.

(Everyone seems to know how to do the @Username thing but me.  I'm embarrassed to have to ask, but I tried a few things, and none of them worked.)

To find the full path of the image, right-click on it and choose "property

Property still works while editing and you could copy/paste the full path (with IE).

@MJWI also had trouble to find out the @ thing. Just type a @ and some letters of the name you'll have a list to choice in (with IE). The forum doesn't behave the same way depending the browser you use.

Hi guys -

Just wanted to add my $.02 cents from IT job experience.  Like with most stuffs, you get what you pay for - and the thing that really costs money in this biz is not storage but bandwidth.  In other words, equipment to hold your stuff costs next to nothing, but the costs related to ensuring that network traffic to and from your stuff is available, secure and flowing at usable speeds are pretty steep.

That's why things like "the cloud" have become so important in the last 4-5 years.  Setting up a server is one thing - keeping it operational 24/7, updated, configured and patched so that it can be available on the web yet safe from being turned into a zombie soldier in some Belarusian botnet brigade is very tricky and expensive business these days.  It's why most "free" hosting services don't allow 3rd party links to stored files anymore.

That said, I'm going through the process of signing up for Amazon Web Services free tier.  From what I've heard, they're good at storing *and* sharing your stuff at reasonable rates.  I'll let you know what I find.

And yes, my "better half" and I sing the praises of PDN everywhere we go - "better than Photo____, even today!"

Thank you, @MadJik!  (Had to try it.) A method so direct, I didn't even think to try it. I was trying things like pasting in the link to the user's profile.

In Firefox, Property is not among the menu selections when the comment is open for editing. When Ctrl is held down while clicking, Edit Image is available, but Edit Image for some reason leaves the Link URL field blank. Too bad; that would be so convenient.

It may be just a glitch, or temporary, but ............................... Photo bucket seem to have UN-blocked the images at this minute :/.

That's so weird.  I checked Yellowman and Goonfella's Galleries a few days ago and all the images had those ugly Photo bucket images, now their Galleries are back to normal and are even clickable.  Very strange :/.

I think that is related to bandwidth. The more hits a user gets the more images are blocked.

If I'm right, more images will reappear as users remove their stuff from PB.

...or maybe PB is waking up to the fact that no one is subscribing and they are bleeding users at an alarming rate?
