paint.net 4.0.15 is now available

This is a hotfix that fixes a crash in the Magic Wand tool.

 

As usual, you can download the update directly from the website, or you can use the built-in updater via Settings –> Updates –> Check Now.

 

The only change since 4.0.14, which you can read about here, is this:

• Fixed a crash in the Magic Wand tool if it was used twice in a row with a selection mode other than Replace.

 

Technically, it's not "twice in a row" that causes the crash. It's actually just using the Magic Wand tool, with a selection mode other than Replace, on any selection that is "pixelated". There are two common sources of pixelated selections: the Magic Wand tool, and the Rectangle Select tool. "Pixelated" selections are comprised solely of straight horizontal or vertical segments whose endpoints are at integer coordinates. This distinction is important because there are some great optimizations you can take advantage of when the data fits into this limitation. Sadly, one of my optimizations fell over in 4.0.14.

Thank you for the v4.0.15 update.
I like the new non-anti-aliased brush (and eraser) behaviour at big sizes!
But should the Hardness slider be greyed-out when non-anti-aliased is selected? (as it has no affect).
Just a thought - I'm not that pedantic.

Yes, I think greying out hardness makes sense in this case. I remember that I intentionally didn't do that back in 2013/2014 when I was finishing up 4.0.0 ... but I don't remember why ...

 

I also want to add the ability to directly control spacing, and more brush shapes. So this will be rethought in the coming months.

Just got the update and really chuffed that you made the mouse cursors visible when over the grey background around the image space.

Works like a charm, no more hunting for the pointer any more!

Hmm, I didn't actually do anything for mouse cursors in this update ... but, glad to know it works!

 

Did you install the big new update for Windows 10 by any chance? The "Creators Edition" or whatever it's called?

It there any information of future development plans?

Especially Paint.Net still lacks a tool, that many other same level image/picture editing software have. 

 

Here is example of perspective tool in gimp, where you can drag/stretch individually of the corners of selection area in picture (or whole picture too), for to change perspective or to fit add-on picture into perspective of base picture or an area in base picture (like into perspective of cube side shape in base picture)

Those are much more difficult to do with Paint.Net, with its tools and available plugins because there is not so easy wysiwyg-tools available yet in Paint.Net for to edit perspectives. 

 

Is there any plans that Paint.Net would have such perspective tool too?

I'm not sure wether you really have searched for or not. However - there ARE such WYSIWYG plugins like Oblique, Perspective, TR's Distort This!

Yes there are some plugins for perspective editing, but they are far from the usability, easiness and time saving of real wysiwyg perspective tool. 

I added suggestion picture of such perspective tool in that my previous message. 

I made that example pic with another image editing perspective tool in few minutes quickly (such can be done even 2 minutes easily), pasting add-on image ("paint.net is the best" -text images) on base picture several times and dragging those add-on images on corners into sides of cube and perspective-cube very easily. 

With present tools and plugins in paint.net such to do is very hard to do and takes lots of time - because lack of tools and the plugins are not wysiwyg oriented.

I'm completely different opinion.

Because you obviously already have positive experiences with other programs, I suggest that you continue to use them. The advantage of PDN is its modularity and extensibility. You just install what you need.
If you are not satisfied with a plugin, you should tell that the developer of the plugin, instead of hoping that for PDN a general solution is developed that is standard.

Locking because 4.0.15 has a crash in it that I'm investigating and I'm hoping to push out a 4.0.16 very shortly. Until then I've disabled the updater; you can still download 4.0.15 manually from the website but you won't be able to get it via the built-in updater. Stay tuned.
