How to properly use the magic wand

So iv been looking at tuts and trying them and many of them have magic wand usage and iv tried and tried but it just wont happen . As i try to select a area of a picture with the magic wand it either selects half of the background aswell or doesnt select enough of the area i want to select . And if it does i got to copy it and there is lots of litte bits , like fine detail that it hasnt copied so i have holes in the area i have copied . I have change the tolarence but it either does select enough or it selects too much , and yes i have gone over to that page were it tells you about each tool and how it works but i still cant use it properly please someone tell what im doing wrong .
