If I select the layer I want to edit, the other layer(s) are not selected, and thus not visible.  Instead, I want to be able to see the other layers, but want my edits to be confined only to the one (selected) layer.

Hi sabuncu - welcome to the forum! ;)
I think you may be confusing a layer being selected (highlighted light blue and editable) with its 'visibility' (checkbox or opacity slider)?

Have you read the documentation about layers here?

Thank you Red ochre, indeed I was confusing those concepts.  Read the documentation, which set me straight.  Thanks again.

Yes - use the Layers Window (F7)  :Layers: and select the layer you want to edit.

Thanks.  Also, didn't know about F7, very useful.
