Installing PDN under Wine in Linux.

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had any success installing PDN under Wine in Linux? I've tried multiple times with version 4.0.9 and even 3.5.11, with no luck at all. I thought v 4.0.9 would succeed, but it crashed while trying to install Dot.NET 4.6.1.

Wine is a hit or miss with most Windows s/w. I can install PhotoShop, but PDN seems to not want anything to do with it. Just curious if anyone had success in this and how they accomplished it.

I've never tried it myself, but someone got v3.5 to work.

https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=19822

Are you using the latest version of Wine? I know the packages provided by many of the distros are still on v1.6.

The only thing I've ever installed under Wine was Age of Empires 2. That works great; even better than it does on Windows.

Eureka, finally I managed to install a working version of PDN in Linux under Wine. I had to upgrade Wine to version 1.9.3, which allowed me to create a Win10 virtual drive. Unfortunately I was unable to install PDN version 4.0.9, I had to settle for version 3.5.11 instead. Oh well, at least I was able to get a working version of PDN in Linux.

Looking at the Wine AppDB, .NET 4.5.2 is the latest available framework. And of the 3 attempts to install, 2 might have been done post-4.0.7 and have just very simple entries where they both say "nothing works". Since .NET 4.6 doesn't seem to work yet, that might've been the main problem.

The one over a year ago got "Installer fails with an error looking for mscoree.dll."

I might try putting Wine on my laptop and trying a pre-4.0.7 by just copying the folder from my Win10 desktop thus skipping the installer... probably will fail.

Yeah a "portable" copy could work in 4.0.7+ but I doubt it'll be successful in 4.0.6

I wouldn't mind being able to use Paint.NET on my Mac at work

Yes the problem is trying to install .NET  4.6.1 in Wine. I could never get it installed on numerous attempts. I haven't tried PDN 4.0.7 or 4.0.6. I don't have a copy of those versions anymore anyway.

Actually it works pretty good in VMware if you apply the EnableSmoothMouseInput=False fix from here: http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/28852-line-jumpsskips-to-top-of-window-while-drawing/#entry411991

Also, disable hardware acceleration from Paint.NET's settings. It runs much faster that way.

Yes and Oracle's Virtual Box works equally well in Linux. However, you still have to install Windows on the Virtual Machine and before you can launch a windows program, you have to boot up the Windows OS. The advantage to using Wine, is the launch time for the windows program is very short and only requires clicking on the shortcut. PDN version 3.5.11 runs very well with all the compatible plugins and only takes about 5 seconds to load in Linux under Wine.

Here is an example done all in PDN in Linux under Wine using midora's Animate Images plugin.

@dipstick,

I got .Net Framework v4.6.1 to install using its silent install option.
I also got paint.net 4.0.9 to install using the .msi file.

paint.net doesn't run though, claims it can't find 'msvcp140.dll' even though it right where it should be. Even did the install of MSVCP++ 2015 to get it to register 'msvcp140.dll', but it still didn't work.

I also tried paint.net v4.0.6. It installed using the .msi file. However, it didn't run due to Direct2D issues. I switch from Nouveau to Nvidia's proprietary driver. paint.net then ran, but its crash dialog came up immediately (more Direct2D issues).  I'm guessing the same would happen with 4.0.9 if I got past the MSCP140 issue.

I'm surprised you got DotNet 4.6.1 to install at all. This is the error I got while trying to install.

Looks like I'll have to settle for PDN v3.5.11 in my Linux. Not that big a deal though as it is very capable. It only has issues with some new plugins....

Sounds like you have the Windows version set to XP. You can change it to Windows 7 by running winecfg.

Then run the install .Net 4.6.1 using its /q (quite/silent) parameter

wine NDP461-KB3102436-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU.exe /q
You can verify a successful installation by looking at the installation log in your Windows %temp% directory.

Of course paint.net v4 won't run, so moot point.

I gave up trying to install PDN 4.0.9 in Wine, so I just installed it in a VM. Check it out, now I can run PDN versions 3.5.11 and 4.0.9 at the same time...

Recently someone PM'd me about how to install PDN v3.5.11 in Linux under Wine. I decided to post instructions here in case anyone else wanted to know.

1) Install Wine. (get it from your distro's s/w repository)
2) Install playon linux. (get it from your distro's s/w repository)
3) Run Playon Linux and create a 32-bit XP virtual drive.
4) Use Playon Linux to install “dotnet40” (DotNet 4.0) on that virtual drive.
5) Use Playon Linux to install “gdiplus” on that virtual drive.
6) Use Playon Linux to install PDN 3.5.11 (It's the latest PDN version I can get running) on that virtual drive.

That should create a PDN shortcut on your desktop that you can use to open PDN. You can also drag an image into the shortcut.
Good luck.

It works on Linux Mint 17.3 KDE 'Rosa', but failed in Linux Lite 3.0...

Updates :

I'm able to install Paint.NET 3.5.11, following dipstick's method after more than two failed attempts.

The cause of failure : no python library was installed in previous installations of PlayOnLinux ( corrupted installations ). So please make sure that it's a complete installations of PlayOn Linux. Reinstalling PlayOnLinux if you failed to install Paint.NET.

The screenshot of Paint.NET 3.5.11 in ubuntu-based Linux Lite system.

Because PlayOnLinux facilitates the installation of supporting tools like dotnet40 and gdiplus. It also makes it much easier to manage virtual drives and create shortcuts. It also allows registry editing and much more......

Why even bother with PlayOnLinux? Just use standard Wine commands to install paint.net.

Because I failed to install Paint.NET with actual Wine. On both Linux Mint and Linux Lite. I need to install it as an admin or failed to continue the installations, each time, and I'm simply giving up.

Now my issue was solved and hopefully my experience can help other people who migrated from Windows to Linux Lite.

p/s :

1. I can drag pictures directly to Paint.NET window in Linux Lite, which never happened when I was still with Linux Mint. As long as that picture isn't a high-res picture.

2. With PlayOnLinux, we can install some softwares that were impossible to install at actual Wine ( for example MusicBee 2.5.5804 that been rated as thrash in WineHQ ).

For those who had installed Paint.NET via PlayOnLinux only...

Is This 'Window 98-like' display appears too dull and not a happy ambient for you ?

f4053f39ca.jpg

Simply installing Luna Theme, and you'll get an ambient that closer to the native surrounding in Windows.

d848ebfc86.jpg

Open PlayOnLinux, choose Configure ( the one with gear icon )> Select the virtual drive where you installed Paint.NET.

Choose Install Component and then choose Luna Theme.

All the best !

The folks over at CodeWeavers added support for d2d_factory_CreateDCRenderTarget to Wine, so paint.net v4 now gets a little further.

It's now getting hung up on something to do with the UI animations in paint.net (as far as I can tell).

I'm still looking over the debug output from Wine too.

Edit: Looks like UIAnimationManager (4c1fc63a-695c-47e8-a339-1a194be3d0b8) is not available in Wine yet.

Edit 2: I copied UIAnimation.dll from an old Win 7 box, and registered the dll in Wine. That allowed me to move past the UIAnimationManager issue.

There is now a Direct2D issue with CreateLayer, but I may be able fix the issue in the Wine source code, since it already supports CreateLayer (it supports 1 of 3 methods).
