paint.net 4.0.9 is now available!

Recommended Posts

There were still a few nasty bugs that were found in 4.0.8, so here’s an update that squashes them. The selection and Line/Curve tools should now be trouble-free for everyone!

As usual, you can download the update directly from the website, or you can use the built-in updater via Settings –> Updates –> Check Now.

Here are the fixes:

  • Fixed: Selection tools would sometimes crash
  • Fixed: Line/Curve tool would draw nothing if the Shapes tool was configured for "Draw Filled Shape"
  • Fixed: Thumbnails for .PDN files were not working on some systems
  • Fixed: The "Finish" button in the toolbar would not update its enable/disable state when switching between images

Enjoy!

It would've been faster but the power went out last night right as I started the publish process :) Such is life ...

Very fast... I'm impressed. Uh... there's a reason we have a whole house generator.....

Thanks, Rick!  That explains why my thumbnails went haywire for awhile.    :)

It's a bug in WinForms, IIRC.

You have A LOT OF PLUGINS installed. My advice at that point has always been to remove plugins that you don't use. It just causes problems.

Fixed: Selection tools would sometimes crash

oh well, I should've installed the update before starting today's work in paint.net :/

It crashed on me while using the lasso selection tool (moving the selected pixels) when working on a 8k by 20k pixel image. Just sent you the crash log before reading that it was fixed with 4.0.9.

Brings me to a different topic though: do you have any large image improvements in the works/planned? SImple things like being able to disable the selection border animation ("walking ants"?) making it static instead. And disabling the preview when moving a selection. Only drawing the selection border during movement and then drawing the actual content on mouseup. Like you're able to disable the window contents in Windows when moving windows ;) Would greatly improve responsiveness when working with large images I assume.

You can turn off animations in the Settings dialog if you like.

The other stuff you're asking for won't be implemented. It wouldn't actually improve responsiveness. All of the rendering kernels involved in those operations support cancellation, so rendering or not rendering interim results is only going to be upwards of 1 or 2 frame of latency (1 frame is ~16ms at 60hz).

Large images have other performance problems related to the data structures which are used for keeping track of invalid (dirty) rectangles. If you have lots of RAM but you're seeing hitches, pauses, stutters, then that's the problem.

thanks for the quick answer.

So when working with these large images does paint.net still render each frame from the original resolution and scale it down to my zoom level? I'm mostly working at a zoom of 10 or 20%, so I'll never get close to actually seeing all source pixels. Would be enough to generate thumbnails of about half the original size and use these for moving stuff around. I'm thinking of how in adobe programs one can set the rendering quality to make things faster.

edit: is there any reason images are not temporarily saved when a crash occurs by the way? When it crashed I lost 4 unsaved images. Since the bug only occured on that one image I was working on the other 3 images should not be corrupted and be savable after all, right? Like firefox can restore tabs, or at least try and see whether they're corrupted or saved correctly.

4.0.9 won't install

During install I get this warning

(the progress bar first runs to the end and then the warning comes up)

JanDeclercq, http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/106719-installation-issue-on-windows-10-for-408/

Installing the VC++2015 runtimes will fix this. It's not known why this happens though, because it shouldn't be necessary to do that. (Microsoft REALLY @#$%ed this up in Visual Studio 2015)

Edit: directl link to download so you don't have to read all that stuff and hunt for the link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48145

Wonder why that is? My version of Windows is version 10.0 (10240) and according to Windows "Programs and Features", i'm only up to VC++2012, yet PDN version 4.0.9 had no problems installing and works fine. Some older plugins don't play well however...

Rick Brewster,

Reinstalling the VC++2015 redistributables solved the problem.

Some problems with other programs got solved also.

The redistributables were initially installed as a part of Visual Studio Communtity edition.. and must have been corrupted :s

Thanks for your fast help.

  • 2 weeks later...

is there a way to get the old versions for paint.net like 4.0.X because the 4.6 Microsoft framework isn't working for me so going down one or more updates for paint.net will lead to going down versions for Microsoft frameware so any way to get old version of paint.net that do not contain viruses because that is a problem as well plz reply asap

No. Older versions are specifically not supported. See Forum Rule #7...

7) You must be using the latest version of Paint.NET, available here. This is a requirement. If you want to stay with an older version then that is your right, but we cannot help you. If you are unable to upgrade, then please post in the troubleshooting section.

Have you tried installing .net 4.6 separately?

Great Job! Thank you!

I hope in next versions you add layer split functionality by color channels and edit its as grayscale. Sometime I need ajdust only alpha layer in texture.

On Windows 8.1, installing PDN 4.0.9 advises that its going to install .NET 4.6.1 and then PDN.

Fine....

Then, with 4.6.1 in, SetupFrontEnd.exe dies, insisting it requires .NET 4.6 ?

Can you verify that .Net 4.6.x was installed successfully?

You can use the .NET Framework Setup Verification Tool

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/astebner/2008/10/13/net-framework-setup-verification-tool-users-guide/

(September 25th, 2023)  Sorry about any broken images in my posts. I am aware of the issue.

The reboot did the trick, but I'm just curious that it seems to head off in two directions at once! Is it perhaps just looking for the 'latest' .NET version and finds 4.6.1 by accident?
