Click here to view or download it Techniques for colouring gem shapes (for experienced users) Racerx, Lynxster4 and Mottoman asked about the techniques I used to shade Lynster4's Faceted Gemstones: Lynxster4s Faceted Gemstone pack Since they are all competent Pdn users this tutorial is not aimed at complete beginners and focuses on techniques which may help, rather than be a definitive guide. How you mix these techniques is down to personal taste. Do experiment and please do show your results in this or the Faceted gemstone thread! Thanks again to Lynxster4 for creating and sharing the shapes. 1.0 Motion blur method. 1.1 Use brush width 1, no fill, Primary color = white, on a new layer and duplicate a few times, maybe even save as 'original' shape.png . Always useful to have the original to use as a mask later! 1.2 Turn off visibility for the 'spare' layers. Make your background layer a dark grey to see what you are doing. Use motion blur not centred like this: 1.3 Adjust opacity with my Alpha threshold. 1.4 Either use another copy of the original layer or duplicate the previous motion blurred layer and again motion blur this time at a different angle. 1.5 Same again at another angle. The angles used should be sympathetic to those in the shape used.Adjust opacity of each layer. Combine into one and use the 'original' to select outside area to delete. 2.0 Splinter Blur method. Consider the number of directions to get angles sympathetic to the gem's angles. Use Alpha threshold to adjust opacity. The outside of the original image can be used to confine the blur to gem. 3.0 Gradients Galore method. Gradients Galore can work only on objects (the gem shape lines) and/or within selections (when the faces are selected with the magic wand). If using selections (from the original image) it is a good idea to use a large canvas size to get smoother selection edges... but I didn't! The 'spectrum' transitions are useful for iridescent effects. The circle options are useful for lighting effects on the larger faces too. 4.0 Bevel Object method By selecting the internal spaces (facets) of the gem, then creating a new layer and pressing backspace, an 'object' is created. Make sure none of the facet objects are touching, then run my Bevel Object plugin. 5.0 Put these together and you should get images like this. Please note this tutorial is only to explain the techniques I have used. I am sure there are many other effective methods to try. 13 Quote Red ochre Plugin pack.............. lynxster4
@Red...this wasn't as easy as I first thought. After studying your tutorial, I realize the possibilities are endless! After tinkering for a day-and-a-half, this is what I came up with (and these are the decent ones...I had a few 'turkeys' that I scrapped): I started to follow your tut and then just did my own thing. This one is an attempt at a photoshop tut I found online; no directions, just pictures only. That was a real challenge! (I used Cookies' PSEmboss on this one...thanks, Cookies!) Thank you so much Red for writing this tutorial; it has given me a better understanding of some things in PDN that I was unsure of. My favourite is the yellow one, you did great blending the straight edges. Thanks so much, Eli! I'm glad you like them. Yes, blending the straight edges on the yellow one was a bit of a bear, but it worked out. Ishi
Ah that's a technical bit. Have to try some if I get the effort. Its the shiny/polished types, not my cup of tea. Interesting use of gradients and bevels to make the gem facets. How do you draw those hexagonal and polygonal shapes by the way? Someone with enough effort, time, patience and technique might just make a gem galore out of this tutorial. Thanks Red Ochre.

I'm glad you found some of the techniques useful and pleased you are experimenting with other ideas too.Save those 'turkeys' and come back to them in a few weeks - you may see them differently. Seerose - You are a very capable Pdn user...and young at heart! Ishi - the gem shapes are all Lynxster's work (link in first post). 2 Quote Red ochre Plugin pack..............
