What kind of computer are you using?

Recommended Posts

I was curious about what type of computers everyone is using. Although I decided to make it a bit different from the "what's your favorite computer company" thread.

Let's try more specific info about your PC. ;)

Like...

If you have any other things about your PC you find awesome, feel free to add them. I started with a few basics of mine. :D

[offtopic]Would any of the mods consider deleting some of the locked threads? I went through all the pages of posts to make sure this thread didn't exist already. There number of locked threads was amazing. Although David's Boy or Girl poll was hilarious to me because of Rick's post before he locked it  [/offtopic]

Custom Build: Yes, just built it a couple of weeks ago.

Laptop or Desktop: Desktop

OS: Windows Vista Business, got it for free so I can't complain, but I would much rather have Vista Home

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad, 2.4GHz

Motherboard: Gigabyte P35-DS3p, if I didn't still have the box on my floor I wouldn't have been able to remember that, I should probably do something with those boxes.

Video/Graphics: nVidia GeForce 8600GT 512MB

How much HD space? 500Gb + 320Gb + 160Gb

How much RAM? 4Gb although it only sees 3Gb. Pity not all the programs I use are 64bit compatible, considering I can get a free 64bit Vista through my Uni.

Custom Build, if not which company? Custom build

Laptop or Desktop: Desktop

OS: Windows XP Pro x64 (got it free of course, volume licensed)

Processor: Intel Quad Extreme QX6850 3.3GHz (10x333, 10x360 when I need it)

Motherboard: ASUS Striker Extreme

Video/Graphics: XFX GeForce 8800GTS 640MB (I know it kinda sucks, I got it before the GT and the 512MB-GTS existed)

How much HD space? 320 gigs (SATA 2, picked for search-time and cheapness but forgot the values)

How much RAM? 4GB (2x2GB) 800MHz CL5 (obviously DDR2, 5:6 with the FSB, dual channel)

700W CoolerMaster PSU with nice cables

Thermaltake Armour case, black (you know, those ones where the entire front is a fan, with blue leds in the fans)

Wireless laser mouse with docking station

Dual 15" CRT monitors - yes, CRT, I can't stand those crappy colours that LCD/TFT gives you and plasma is too expensive. I don't need space behind my screen anyway (what would I want to put there?) They do get quite hot but the 85Hz refresh rate and proper colours make them worth that.

@Curtis: programs that aren't x64Vista-compatible often work fine on XPx64, except 16bit programs of course but they're all old.. XP is faster than Vista anyway, and it complains less.

I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed.. :(

Well at least this thread isn't a complete flop like I thought it would be. :P

usedHONDA, when are you NOT in a talkative, geeky mood?

My computer is insane fast, I don't even want to know how fast some of your computers are. I'm not particularly fond of Intel though.

Harold, I'm glad someone else agrees with me about LCD monitors! I don't like the color either, and its hard to see them from the side if any lights are on at all. I really hate the widescreen thing too, and you can't seem to find a flat screen monitor that isn't. :x

BIOS: Phoenix Rom BIOS plus Version 1.10 A05

Processor: AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual Core 2.0ghz

Custom Build, if not which company?: Custom Build

Laptop or Desktop: Server

OS: Windows XP Pro 32-bit

Power Supply: PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad 750W

Processor: Intel Core2 Duo E6700 2.67GHz (Core 1 is 2.66GHz and Core 2 is 2.67GHz)

Video/Graphics: BFG 7900GTS OC 512MB (I plan to update this card this year to an 8800 or tow two 9800 but so far this card still got better speeds then the 8800's and 9800's)

How much HD space? 120 GB WD Raptor and a 500 GB WD (Both are SATA-2, The Raptor can do 10000 RPMs compare to 7200 RPMs for normal HD's)

How much RAM? 4GB OCZ DDR2 PC2-5400 Gold GX XTC Dual Channel (Memory Timing: 4-4-4-12)

By the way, the next time I get a computer, it's going to be Intel powered. I'm tired of AMD's performance, especially after seeing benchmarks. A Q6700 processor on an NVIDIA SLI-ready motherboard would by my dream. Something like this.

I see surprisingly many people with 4GB ram and a 32bit OS

Massive wastage! you'd waste almost as much ram as when using Vista!

And the driver trouble is nearly gone, except if you have really odd hardware, and PDN is a lot faster in 64bit mode (as are most other CPU-bound programs that are either compiled for long-mode or in MSIL - such 7zip)

I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed.. :(

'Tis not wastage! You can never have too much RAM. Once, just for fun, I took two 2GB RAM chips from my friend's PC (he was on vacation) and stuck 'em in my computer, giving me 5GB of memory. The computer was the fastest it's ever been. Yet, somehow, I was able to occupy about 4.5GB out of cut-'n-pasting, video watching, web browsing, game playing, and image editing.

To be more specific, I was relocating my entire music collection, watching Cloverfield, on like 20 websites at once, playing Trackmania Nations Forever (great freeware racing game), and using my three favorite photo manipulators (Inkscape, PDN, and PS) at the same time

'Tis not wastage!

You misunderstand. I don't mean that 4GB or more RAM is wastage (note that I have 4GB myself) - I'm saying it's wastage on a 32bit OS (which it is, since it can't be used in that case)

I would write plugins, if I knew what kind of plugins were needed.. :(

Ya Windows XP 32-bit may not be able to use the full 4 GB's but in my case I can't go with 3 GB as I am using Dual Channel ram. So that means I must have the same amount of ram in for RAM slots A1 and A2 as RAM slots B1 and B2. Seeing I got 2 GB in A1 and A2, I need to 2 GB in B1 and B2. I know that sucks but it how Dual Channel works and why it has such good performance. I could of went with non Dual Channel like before but why down my performance when my 4GB of Dual Channel can out perform normal DDR2 PC2-5400 4GB of RAM ?

It like getting a 1.60 GHz Celeron instead of the 1.60 GHz Pentium. Why downgrade to that when you know the Pentium is faster then the Celeron even though there the same speeds.

I get 3.25 GB out of my XP Pro and I am happy with it, I also get the full 4 GB from my Linux installion.

A surplus of RAM may be a waste, but its better than not having enough RAM if you ask me. At least you know its going to get the job done! :)

Just 400 something bucks :)

Mine was a little under 400 bucks with shipping and handling. Except I was charged extra shipping for my case because it came from a different warehouse. I guess there was no way they were going to let me get away with only 15 bucks for shipping.

 besides the fact I don't got $130 I already answered that. You should re-read my post. My next OS will be Windows 7 so I not going to waste money on a new version of my OS I already got just to replace it in a year. But do tell me why I want XP Pro 64-bit ?, when I can game on Linux in CoD4 all I want with 4GB. I only need 10 KB for linux OS and the rest is used for the game.

But if your paying for it then do send me the copy of the OME before M$ discontinues it as they said they were going to do.

Well:

*Windows7 is pretty much guaranteed to have more DRM nonsense

*PDN is faster on XP x64 than XP x32

*The chance that M$ will make W7 outperform XP is pretty low

*are you seriously going to pay for something that is practically free?

*even though M$ may drop support for it, software vendors that take themselves seriously won't (they'd be out of business quickly if they did)

*no new bugs - because it isn't new. so no worrying about compatibility

Ok there is linux, but it's superior to windows anyway, there's no arguing that..

Still, if you need any kind of windows for any reason, wasting over 500MB ram seems a bit odd

So.. XP Pro x64 goes for free, it will take a while longer for Windows 7 to become free, easy pickings

But if your paying for it then do send me the copy of the OME before M$ discontinues it as they said they were going to do.

Hm.. Drop me a PM if you're serious about that
