Bobofthedead
I'm not sure whether or not this can be locked because it is asking for technical support, and if it is, then lock away. Anyway, I'm looking at creating a forum on Forumer.com, owing to its recent improvements in stability, and its cost, which falls directly in my price bracket, although if anyone can direct me away, they're more than welcome to convince me - as long as it is free. The main point of this article is to ask a simple question: How difficult is IPB, compared to PHBB? I don't know much about scripting; should I go with the more difficult but better featured IPB, or stick to what I know will be easier? Or is there an alternative you can recommend? Whaddaya reckon? More than one question, but hey... Quote "I am the anarchist, I am the antichrist, I am the walrus, G'JOO G'GOO G'JOOB!" I dig a pygmy, by Charles Hawtree and the Deaf Aids. HITMAN-X-
You should look at the topic that was once up about Paint.NET moving it forum software. I think you will find your anwser. more difficult but better featured IPB Huh what ? IPB is far more easy to work with then phpBB. Scripting is 10x better in it then phpBB. That why I left phpBB and paid for IPB. Also why would you pay for phpBB. It's free ? Quote DEXTUT.COM
Simon Brown
I guess it really depends on how technically able you are and what your needs are. Do you simply want a forum with the same level of sophistication with no other features or are you looking for a forum with more control and extra functions - such as granting blogs to users. You may wish to note that the IPB they are offering is not the latest version as IPB is now a commercial product. You may also want to consider SMF although I have no experience using it. I would personally recommend hosting your forum yourself, giving full control such as downloading the database, but this depends on finding a good free host. If phpBB, would you be using phpBB3 or phpBB2? As far as I know forumer have only recently offered phpBB3 to the public so their system may have more bugs. Alternatively, it could be noted that the delay was noted to beta-testing. If you have a fast internet connection with no download limit (and no FUP) and are prepared to leave your computer running overnight an alternative would be hosting the forum on your own computer (presuming you have time to get Apache/IIS, PHP and MySQL to work). This would prevent you having to look for a good host and give you full control over your forum. Edit: Also why would you pay for phpBB. It's free ? I believe he is referring to hosting. You should look at the topic that was once up about Paint.NET moving it forum software. I think you will find your anwser. Bear in mind that as far as I know forumer is using the old but free version of IPB and you were talking about the recent release.
Bobofthedead
Forumer offers to host them both for free, but I'm not sure about how reliant the IPB fora there are on scripting ability, and how easy it is to modify a forum using the front-end panels, such as the UCP here. It says that IPB is more difficult to use everywhere, but the its never say how difficult, or give examples, so that aspect of forum creation has to be guessed or done by trial and error. I've googled everywhere, but all I can find is one self-styled technological expert or another saying that IPB is difficult but more customisable. Iz confused... Sab, I'm not sure what version of IPB I was asking about, but I'm not aware of any differences. Quote "I am the anarchist, I am the antichrist, I am the walrus, G'JOO G'GOO G'JOOB!" HITMAN-X-
I see he would be going with an unsupported version of IPB that is not offered anymore. Well thats playing with fire. As for hosting, what kind of forum are you making ? if you don't mind me asking. If you were getting the new version of IPB you be happy with it. Unlike phpBB were you have to rip open a lot of php files and add in your scripting. IPB lets you make a copy right on the server. Upload mod files, and edit the copy right from the ACP. But again if it an old version then your playing with fire. Quote DEXTUT.COM
Bobofthedead
The problem is, I don't have money for a new version, and I wouldn't want to splash so much cash about without knowing anything about the software or a serious demand for it. Just FYI, I'm intending to create a forum for the sharing of all forms of humour in an interactive kinda way. Quote "I am the anarchist, I am the antichrist, I am the walrus, G'JOO G'GOO G'JOOB!" Simon Brown
I am unsure as to whether Forumer allows you to edit the template files - but I know of no forum hosting service that allows you to modify the code of your forum. This is another reason why I recommend hosting it yourself. But note that many of the most popular mods for phpBB3 are to add support for features already included in IPB and SMF. Bobofthedead
SMF? Eh? What's that one like? I can't say I've heard of that one really... Oh, and might it be better if I host a forum on a 110mb account? I really am lost here... Quote "I am the anarchist, I am the antichrist, I am the walrus, G'JOO G'GOO G'JOOB!" I really am lost here... SMF isn't that good. Go with PHPBB3 instead of that old IPB. I've tried all 3 types of forums.. SMF is kinda outdated.. & the old free versions of IPB aren't that good. And.. try getting a free host.. as said above. I've tried 110mb.. (not really worth it.) Try Vlexo And if Tyreus.com was accepting signups.. go with them. (I know the administrator personally..) Good luck on your forum. EDIT: If you don't mind waiting some time.. then definitely go with Tyreus. Quote MyBB Tutorials, check out my site. Bobofthedead
Tyreus sounds good, but do you know how long the wait might be? Vlexo sounds good too, but frankly for a 1st-time user the frontpage etc. is confusing and slightly intimidating... If the wait for Tyreus isn't that long, I'll go for that option. If not, then I'm stuck, because I need a service with MySQL, which 110mb charges for. .:EDIT:. After a quick search, I've found the link to Zymic. Maybe I'll try that - is it decent? Bobofthedead
Well, it's got the features I need, at the price I can stretch to (£0.00), I'll give that a go, and upload PHPBB3 to it. Rubrica
If you're looking for the features of IPB, then you may want to consider SMF; Simple Machines Forums. You can either download it and use Zymic to host it yourself (or another hosting place) or you could use something like http://www.smfnew.com to host it for you. However, there are free IPB hosts, one of the better ones is http://www.invisionfree.com ; all it has in the way of ads are some text ads like we have here. Olli
Dont go for Forumer! I Suggest Smfnew.com or phpbbnew.com If you need support i am staff on the support forums so im willing to help you! Bobofthedead
Well, thanks for the offer, but too late. I've installed PHPBB3 on Zymic, and I'm configuring my forum as we speak/type/whatever. Hold on, what's this: * MySQL databases: 1/5 * MySQL users: 1/5 That's how many databases you can have on your account. (PHPBB3 is 1 for example) If you uploaded another type of forum.. Simon Brown
If you uploaded another type of forum.. (for some reason..) it'd add up to 2 Actually you can define a table prefix to allow two forums to use the same database AFAIK.
