I have a line drawing which I've scanned in and am using in paint.net. I'd like to apply a repeating pattern to particular parts of it. I have created a pattern in a second layer and repeated it with Layers/Repeat/Zoom/Tiling. Now the pattern appears across the whole of my image, understandably. So I need to delete it in places. I've tried the eraser but all that seems to do is grey it out, not erase it. Why on earth is that? I've also tried the paintbrush, selecting a colour of zero opacity. All I want to do is set most of the new layer back to the invisible colour, surely? But this has no effect. Also, is there a way to select the area in the line drawing where I want to apply the pattern automatically? I've tried the Magic Wand, and that can clearly identify it because all of my lines start flashing. But beyond getting them all to flash I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm supposed to do. I understood about Ctrl+D. I did that to deselect anything and then tried erasing again and nothing happened. I only have one layer. The background is the invisible colour. I want to replace the text with this. I can do it as described, by selecting a rectangle and pressing delete. Or, as I have now discovered, I can select a colour (not the invisible colour) and using the eraser. Other methods that I thought would have worked - using the eraser with the invisible colour selected and drawing a rectangle with the invisible colour selected have no effect.

Yes it is surrounded by transparency. So I can select a rectangle around it and then press Delete and it goes. Hooray. I still don't understand why the other methods don't work though.

Sorry it is a png, not a jpeg. I don't really know what the difference is apart from in name. I don't want to delete everything, just some of the text.

I have some text on a jpeg which I've loaded into paint.net. The text shows up against a completely translucent background (grey and white checked). I want to delete the text. I've tried: 1. Selecting the eraser and running it over the text. This has no effect at all. 2. Selecting the background colour with the colour picker so that it appears as the primary colour then drawing a filled rectangle. This gives me some little white circles at the corners of the rectangle and a small square with arrows in. I don't know what I'm supposed to do at this stage. If I just press return the History window states that I have finished the rectangle. But no rectangle appears - the text is still there. So how do I do this? I guess paint.net is very different in how it works to Microsoft Paint which I'm familiar with but it's very frustrating how difficult I'm finding it to do simple things. Thanks.

OK, sorry, the problem is with how I'm setting the image sizes on my website, not Paint.net. Surprising that it reduces the file sizes so much. Here's a before and after. They are both pngs. The first is 47.93kb. The second I have created by opening the first with Paint.net and saving it at 32 bits. It is only 727b.

I've got a 50kb png file which someone else has created for me. I open it with paint.net then save it as a new file. This file is only 1KB. If I try to show it on my website it looks all wrong, unsurprisingly. See the image below - the top image is the original the bottom one has been through Paint.net. What's going on and how do I stop this? I tried letting Paint.net auto select the bit depth, and selecting 32bit myself but it made no difference. I can't use MS Paint because I need an area of invisible colour. Thanks

Thanks for your suggestions. Attached is an example that I scanned in with output from MS Paint and paint.net. I used Arial which I think is a ttf. The bottom two lines illustrate the problems I get best. Granted the output with MS Paint is not 100% but I think it's better. I hate to say it but some of your suggestions sound like more trouble than just reverting to using MS Paint. It's good being able to do more than three undos in paint.net but otherwise it's not proving that beneficial to me. The images that I'm producing are of photos with text underneath, nothing particularly complicated.

I get terrible results with text in Paint.net files. It looks OK on screen providing I'm viewing at 100% size. Otherwise it looks really blurry. When I print files out it looks really blurred. I don't have these problems with MS Paint. Is there something I can do about this? Thanks
