wtf,this website is dead for newbies?

i tried to erase the extra line but when i do it,it shows the checher black and white behind the white back ground,how to get rid of it when erasing lines on white background?

can you please tell me the step by step on making avatar or characters...i'm really new about making an art,..please i want to learn and want to improve myself and achieve the goals of creating an art...
