OK, I got it. Fiddled around today and sussed it I think. Duplicated layer, then drew rectangle in solid colour and took the blending opacity down.

Hi all First post, so please be gentle! I have a poster that I'm creating. Anyway, I have the basics, but I'd like to add a banner into the top section. I want the colours to be a slightly washed out version of the background, and to add some text. something like this: I have tried selecting the area and trying to adjust the hues etc, but it's not working. I know it's me, and not the program. Can anyone help me? I'm a real novice, but I'm learning fairly quickly with the tuts.
