A search on 1603 error produces several pages of others who have experienced the same problem with no solution. I will solve the problem by forgetting about paint.net. Any app which creates this much difficulty isn't worth the effort.

Yes, I looked at that list before I posted my message. Nothing on that list solves the problem.

O/S is WinXP Professional SP 3, with Framework 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 installed. When I attempt to install paint.net I get the following cryptic message: "There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor" Click OK and I get the following error message "Error while installing Paint.NET. (1603)" Searching Microsoft site for info on the 1603 error message produces yet more cryptic stuff about security settings, which are not applicable because I am installing to a FAT 32 drive. I have not been able to find anything on this forum which addresses this problem.
