That's a very nice looking first image. What I would do to make it have just a bit more graphically pleasing is to either fix the text or remove it, fix the edges of the cut out guy with not so much feathering, maybe have some of those lines loop throughout his tail or his weapon (aka have some lines over top of the character), and add a bit more texture to the background. But extremely nice job for your first work. It looks very cool!

They're WP sized on a 1024 x 768 resolution. Most likely you have a much higher res.

If you're running windows 7 you could right click on the file and look for . Hopefully you have Windows 7. If not, I think there's some software called Recuva well for file recovery.

Just spotted Paint.NET in my book, "Creating a Web Site", made by Missing Manuals on p. 189. It is quite a good book, and I got jumpy when I saw this.

I like the looks of it, it gives a technological like feel to it.

Here's one of my desktop screenshots to show you I'm not dead... I know I haven't been here in a while, but I'm just sharing my desktop with you. Windows 7 with theme patch and a minimal theme from deviantART... then I have some CD Art Display up in the top right corner and also a clock widget. Bottom right is rocketdock with some sweet minimal icons.

Lol, I get a lot of layers in my images somehow too, and I try not to flatten or merge them because once I add new layers in-between others, I can change blend modes just in case it turns out to look better.

I like your work, but the one thing I would suggest for the spacescape with the earth is to not have it blurred as much. Great job though!
