i have tried to post a screenshot but i keep getting a pop-up that says the file is uploading and it does not complete. - it is a jpg 203kb

i looked through the help and i cannot find an answer to my problem. i am creating a new layer and add the new image to the new layer. then when i click on the first layer, i get a "white box" and not the first layer as i would expect. this wite box is the same shape as the first layer. what is the function of this box?

Hello. I am a newbie and i cannot figure out how to move layers. when i add a new layer, i am unable to move/edit a previous layer. i am unable to get the diffferent layers to line up the way i want. how is this done?
