if i paste an image into another, a white background of the new image overlays part of the original image how do i make it turn see through? so that only the two images are there with no white overlay many thanks jack

okay im kind of new to this and im making a clan tag for game battles i have two images a base layer of call of duty 4 for the background then in a seperate thing i created my clan name and took the white background from that away. but when i paste the clan name into the background the whiteness re appears and ruins the background image. so how do i make the whiteness disappear to make the image behind show? many thanks jack
