  1. Okay, I watched the video and I was able to create a new layer and paint it white. But now, I can't merge the two layers. I have tried saving as a png file as you suggested and tried the merge function, but it is now only showing an all white layer. The image of the black cat is gone. I am using paint.net 4.2.9. Is this the latest version? Thanks again.

      I did it! I did not attempt to merge the layers. I just saved it as a jpeg and it prompted me to flatten it when saving. I did this and now I can open it as a jpeg and it looks perfect. The only thing is, I'm not really sure how I got here, but it is what I want. It seems the processes when applying them in the program are inconsistent, but to be honest, I don't know. Wow, I think one needs a PhD to run this program. Thanks for your efforts in guiding me Ego.
