  1. Hmm... is this kind of tool possible as an upgrade or separate plugin?
  2. In Toli's case it was direct in the effects folder, but I think it is possible to use the PDN user files folder, too - no one forces you to use Toli's DLL.
  3. Maybe I'm a bit clumsy, but in many cases I change the size or the postion of the Layers Window by accident when I use the srollbar on the right side (I know I could use the mousewheel - if there is one, but that does not affect my request). This led me to request an option to lock the windows on their current position/size. This will not only help clumsy fishermen, but would be also I nice gesture to the growing group of elder people using computers. (I hope I don't use clichés regarding elder people, but I was never old so I don't know. It's also a help if you drank to much coffee.)
  4. Indeed, and it was/is not my intention that the topic changed that way. Internet support for PDN files would be almost useless, cause the PDN files are in many cases to large to use them effectively on the internet. I "only" think it would be a great improvement if we could use PDN files in - for example - an image managing application like Windows Photo Gallery. BTW, I'll now provide a link to a page were a DNG WIC Codec is offered. It's a commercial page and I don't say anyone should by this stuff - in my opinion it's typical money making. I don't think this counts as advertising cause I got the link von the Wikipedia page in my first post. http://www.ardfry.com/dng-codec/
  5. Which old format... PNG..? However, regarding translation stuff: 1) You should mind doing it the same way like Toli did, which means that the strings are stored in INI files. People could upload INIs with the appropriate translation, and if anyone doesn't like a localization, he could change it on his own without nagging you. 2) If you gonna move Custom Brushes to the Tools submenu, you should not localize the submenu string. In the German version (I'm not experienced enough to say what is correct for other languages), the Tools Window of Paint.NET is also called "Tools". Google might give you "Werkzeuge", which is rather something like this. The English term is used in Germany as well for computer software. Also, and this counts for any language, if you localize "Tools" and e.g. pyrochild* does not, you would get two "Tools" menus if you don't use English - one localized and one English. This is not of importance if you use INIs or quit the localization. --- * Interesting idea. I may follow your lead on this one.
  6. Windows Imaging Component (WIC) is a part of Windows Vista and - as Wikipedia claims - of XP Service Pack 3 (?) which is said to come at the beginning of May 2008 (?). For XP SP 2, it is available as download (1.2 MB). WIC introduces the Codec system known from video files for image files. For example, after the installation of XVID / DIVX etc. you can view e.g. XVID-encoded video files with any appropriate player (WMP etc.). With WIC, you can open any image file format in any WIC-enabled application as long as the corresponding codec is installed. If anyone would be able to do a WIC codec for the Paint.NET file format (*.PDN), we could view and manage PDN files in - for example - Windows Photo Gallery (the one which is included in Vista) or Windows Live Photo Gallery (which is available for XP, too). I claim this would be a benefit. --Wikipedia page for WIC --How to write a WIC enabled Codec (MSDN) --WIC Overview (MSDN) --WIC download (Microsoft)
  7. That would mean your post is pointless. kernalphage wants to do scanning etc., and a tutorial about effects does not help him further. It only creates confusion.
  8. I don't think scanning is possible via plugin, so an effects tutorial is no help. At the moment, basic scripting is available via Script Lab, but it's for effects only, cropping and scanning, also everything related to layers, is not possible. According to the Roadmap, scripting may be available in Paint.NET 4.0 (current 3.30), which will be done in 2009 (hopefully).
  9. I don't think we need such a submenu. Either "Advanced" or the effects root should be used. As long as there are no other useful plugins which are using "Tools", I will not download and use this plugin - though I think it's a good one. I don't think we need submenus as long as they have not at least 4 entries. Sadly the Plugin Mangament was not included in 3.20. A registry key or a XML file would be enough cause a primitive management is definately better than no kind of management - but that is offtopic. Nice plugin, but the idea with the submenu is wrong. "Advanced" might be the correct place because it was introduced with Script Lab, which delivers 4.0-said-features before 4.0. I don't think "Advanced" is restricted to plugins which have a "lab" in their name. Maybe Custom Brushes could be moved to "Tools", but still it would have only 2 entries. Advanved would host Script Lab + Effects Lab + Codelab + Custom Brushes + Polygon = 5 entries = senseful submenu.
  10. Maybe you should look how Photoshop or GIMP deal with that topic. I wasn't able to unpack the ABR files of Photshop with 7zip, so obviously they are not just zipped stuff.
  11. I don't think I have the knowledge to talk about such stuff, but I'd made it ZIP-based, meaning the format is a ZIP - or 7zip - with a changed extension, which includes the brushes, maybe together with an Ini or XML file (last one e.g. for autor, version etc.). The advantage is that you can manually edit it.
  12. I've never heard of that plugin, and search returns this thread.
  13. It's not that bad, and the fact you include translations is a very plus. The main problem is the long string in the effects menu.
  14. While this is not that related to the discussion of a new - lossless - file format implementation, it is wrong. With PDN's implementation of JPEG, you'll get horrible results especially with red image parts even if you save at 100. With GIMP, you can access enhanced options of JPEG and achieve a "near lossless" quality, but you still get artifacts, visible when zooming into the picture.
  15. I. Can you please change the German string in the effects menu? It's too long and screws up the entire look. I would suggest (1) "Wählbare Pinsel" / (2) "Spezifische Pinsel" / (3) "Eigene Pinsel" BTW, "Zeichnen Sie mit benutzerdefinierten Pinsel" is wrong in the German grammar, it has to be either "Zeichnen Sie mit benutzerdefiniertem Pinsel" (Sing.) or "Zeichnen Sie mit benutzerdefinierten Pinseln" (Plural). I don't know whom you took for the translation, but many Germans have enormous problems with the Dative case. II. I think you are aware of it, but at least the German translation is incomplete. "Search Brushes" = "Pinsel durchsuchen" or just "Suchen" (= "Search") "Add Pinsel" would be like in English "Hinzufügen Brushes", the correct way is "Pinsel hinzufügen"; as this is quite long, I recommend just "Ergänzen" (= "Add"). Thanks for your work and attention.
  16. there's a thread in one of the programming forums, by MadJik, I think. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=21166 :?:
  17. I don't think melting forum sections will result in a benefit - but it is true, there should be something like a documentation (no need that it's written by Rick himself). For me personally, the lack of a proper guide comes to my eyes when I have to tell almost every developer about the localizeable submenus. There is in fact no "official" place on this entire forum where you find the appropriate strings. And I assume this is only an example. Including new features (for developers) is one thing - to actually allow them to use the features is another point. What are new features worth without a guide how to access them? Paint.NET can do amazing stuff - and it should be public knowledge how to let PDN do it.
  18. Thank you very much. I look forward to the final.
  19. I don't claim that I'm the right one to answer you, but I haven't seen anything regarding your request. Also a scriptlab would not be the ideal solution - if your language is not English it would not work (if the scriptlab was done in an English environment). The GIMP "plugin" doesn't work in the current version of GIMP, BTW.
  20. I have the current version - but I have a friend called Typo...
  21. Well, I don't believe this to be on purpose. In Paint.NET 3.20, select the Zoom Tool as default. After you restarted PDN, you get this instead of
  22. Did he? I'm confused. If you mean the perspective helper, I think this one only draws lines as a help... (?) A plugin to really change the perspective of an object would be nice.
  23. No, what he means is not EXIF. EXIF is stuff like "Date taken" and so on. JPEG allows to embed ICC profiles, which are not metadata but used to maintain the colors of the picture. See Wikipedia: Many JPEG files embed an ICC color profile (color space). Commonly used color profiles include sRGB and Adobe RGB. Because these color spaces use a non-linear transformation, the dynamic range of an 8-bit JPEG file is about 11 stops. However, a large number of applications are not able to deal with JPEG color profiles. (eg: all web browser excluding Apple Safari, The GIMP) Indeed GIMP does handle the ICCs properly, while Paint.NET doesn't - as far as I know.
  24. Does this regard JPEG-LS? If so: no, it has ".jls". JPEG/JPEG 2000 seem to have a lossless mode, too (?), but JLS is a different thing and is really "lossless". It is especially good for pictures PNG is not made for (high details etc.).
  25. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG-LS Beats optimized PNGs with the cost of transparency. Sadly it's not far spreaded. If anyone wants to make a lossless plugin, I'd prefer JPEG-LS. I don't know about the licensing stuff, of course.
