Here is a screenshot of the layer blending options in action, from Adobe Photoshop CS (ugh). Click on to see full screenshot. In this case, I edited the "Blending Options" of the top layer, the trees, and chose to "Blend If" the gray value was greater than 80. As you know, photoshop is both (a) ridiculously expensive to legally own outside of work, ( heavy and takes 5 billion years to load, © does way more than i need, and (d) has the worst history/undo/redo system EVAR! so i don't even use it at work. i love paint.net, this is just one little feature i miss. Hopefully this illustrates what I had in mind!

That does sound useful. I'm sure one of these programmer guys could write something like that. Other that that, I think MadJik's solution would kinda work for you. Right... of course, in the example I gave, the magic wand works perfectly fine. So let me change my example from a person to a tree in front of a white wall. Where little bits of white are showing through. Then the magic wand is... less magic and more tedious, and just choosing white to be transparent would be much simpler. Anyway, I appreciate the suggestions, but I'm not really looking for workarounds. I'll just file this one under "Feature Request". Thanks again for the replies!

hi! thanks for the reply. this plugin is very useful for masking, and will come in handy, but what i had in mind originally was a little simpler. E.g., "here is a picture with a person in front of a white wall. i want the wall to be transparent, therefore i will say Blend If Layer Is >= 230 (out of 255)." just something i've found useful in the past for simple stuff, but i'm sure i'll manage without. :wink:

hey, i was wondering if it is possible to set the layer transparency based on the color value. for example, i'd like a layer to be transparent wherever the layer is white (value>=255), or maybe i'd like this layer to be transparent where the underlying layer is dark-grey or darker (value<=30). there is something similar for layers in photoshop. if it's not possible at this point, i think this feature would be useful. thanks for a great program!
