  1. Having a quick read, found these :

    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Scanning-Faxing-and-Copying/C310-hp-photosmart-premium-scan-problem/td-p/1473051

    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c02450835〈=en&cc=us&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=4023238

Also, another suggestion I stumbled across suggested you change your settings to set it to 'scanner' as it might be set to printer/scanner so the device driver is accessing the printer part only. Which would then mean the scanner does not exists as far as any software is concerned

It appears, like most scan software included with scanners, that HP assume you will be doing everything through their software and simply don't take into account people might actually not want to use their software or need to scan directly into other software without using the scanner interface. All the instruction I can find point to the HP scanner software manual

Which, though it doesn't help your problems, is why I install nothing but the default scanner drivers so that software can 'see' the scanner and do not install the bloated included software

I've used all-in-ones in the past and gave up on them, but they do have the advantages of its all there and some of the more expensive models are worth the extra expense ..... It was the cost of the ink that put me off, and constantly finding the cartridges were blocked yet again as I hadn't used the printer in a few days. That was a HP all-in-one

  2. What printer/scanner/camera are you trying to use and have you looked to installing the scanner drivers

If I use VueScan it works with the scanner immediately after a fresh Windows install, BUT nothing else can 'see' the scanner. Once I have installed the scanner drivers other software can now 'see' the scanner. VueScan works as it doesn't need any other software apart from a scanner and VueScan

Reading your question again, are you asking why the 'aquire from scanner', if you are its greyed out as it cannot 'see' a scanner

Silly question, but do you have a scanner connected, or is it an HP 'all-in-one' printer/scanner. If it is, try connecting it to the desktop using a USB cable instead of via wireless

Same answer again, if you are using the included HP software and everything is working fine then my guess is 3rd party needs other drivers installing first. But I have read on other forums that wireless can cause 'issues' with some software. So connecting directly via a USB cable usually fixes it. Unless your printer is in another room, which may then cause some headaches

  3. Is there an easy way to apply multiple effects on a set of images or individual images, similiar to something like a preset in LightRoom

For example, if I run the following effects I have to apply it to each image one effect at a time and repeat for each image that I want the exact same effects applied but would prefer to do it all in one go

    Blur/(GPU) Gaussian Blur

    Noise/Reduce Noise

    Photo/Sharpen+

I use these to clean up the moire from scans and reduce dust/dirt then apply a mild sharpen effect to bring back the now softenend image back up slightly. Being able to have presets would be a real bonus for quick clean ups, of digital camera images or camera phone images

I found it by spending a bit more time looking through the menus, under the Effect menu and the Advanced tab and creating a custom effects script ......

But now would like to see if I can have a list of presets instead of having to load them through the script engine one at a time, maybe an option under the 'Effects/Presets' menu option listing all the scripts that are currently saved

  4. Further update :

Just reinstalled Windoze today from scratch, not a restore disk, but fresh install with a proper WinXP Pro install CD

Paint.net is struggling to save images when using save as and takes an absolute age and nothing else can be done with the computer until it has decided to complete saving, which I believe is somehow linked to the new feature of saving in 24-bit or 8-bit for .BMP images

If I save the .BMP image using the standard save or clicking the little disk icon to do a straight save without doing a save as then the image is saved straight away as things should be

Can it not be changed in the next betas to have some sort of options where we can control some settings, like forcing 24-bit or 8-bit saving instead of the auto detect as at present

Also, if I select multiple images and do an open with paint.net used to load each image in turn and put them in the image bar on the top of the paint.net main screen, now that doesn't work and when I exit paint.net then the next image is then loaded. I can deal with this but makes editing slower, not much, but its still an annoyance

  5. Its getting odder ....

Sorted out the network drive issues, but it still saves slow, found out if I just click save then its as quick as it used to be, but if I choose save as it takes ages

Also, if I load an image using right-click and open with paint.net it loads straight away, but running paint.net and then loading the images using load then it takes a good few seconds

Another weird issue, I have uninstalled all instances of .net using Uninstaller Pro as it also does a better job of uninstalling software and also removing old files and registry junk that a lot of software 'forgets' to uninstall, so tried running paint.net before installing any version of .net expecting an error and it still runs without complaing that .net is not installed ??

  6. I think its to do with it looking on the network, as I had my girlfriends computer shared on the router and network so I can access hers to copy things back and forth without having to mess about with pen drives and such as another GFX editor saved straight away

Windoze is looking for the network but can't find it as I've removed all shares but for some reason they are still showing up so my system is trying to access a network drive that isn't there anymore, and waiting to time out before carrying on the task at hand

Working on it now, so I'll report back if I solve it

  7. they are all .BMP, 16-bit, various resolution, 1-layer or 2-layer gives exactly the same result, but 1-layer mainly

I'll try uninstalling .net v3.5, and reinstall v2.0 and see what happens as thats really the only major change I have done to my system even before I reinstalled Windoze

  8. Has anybody had this problem that images take a long time to save, nothing else can be done while this happens, not all images just most

I installed .net using the v3.5 full installation thats available from MS official site, so if its an issue with v3.5, I can easily uninstall it and get v2.0. I just installed that as it includes all versions and services packs and sort of future proofs

This didn't happen previously, everything was pretty much straight away, but I've reinstalled Windows since so can't guarantee what has been installed that may be screwing this up, other that the .net v3.5 installation

Running on a dual core AMD 6000+ with 4GB memory and all my hard drives are less than 12 months old and mainly SATA

  9. Been using Paint.net for quite a while now, but I want to edit a very high resolution scanned photograph to remove scratches, minor dirt and imperfections and i am now getting the error Not enough memory to load the image

I have 4GB of memory, plus I use a page file of 8GB

I'll admit that the scanned file is a rather large 180MB TIFF image, with the scanned details of 1200dpi with 9600x12000 pixels at 24bit

Am I asking too much, and should scan at 600DPI as that opens fine ......

Just for future, is the out of memory error related to the system just hasn't got the available resources or is it related to the softwares memory limits

    thanks

Just tried loading the same image into PhotoShop CS3 Extended, it loads in fine

  10. Many thanks, I fiddled around for a bit and got some quick practice in so next time I know what I'm supposed to be doing, and I now know how to add backgrounds or watermarks, so the end results should look even better with a lot less effort and wasted time

I managed to do all the editing and final printing in Paint.net which is what I wanted to achieve instead of having to fiddle about using multiple software packages

  11. If I am creating custom DVD sleeves, I basically do the front, spine and back as separate images then currently join them together is a round about way using the image import function in MS Word

It works, and also allows me to final tweak the image size to my specifications, but its a pain

Plus like I did recently, I thought I'd have a go at creating a background image for the DVD cover as well, so for that I needed to join all the parts together and treat it as one image to allow Paint.net to overlay a background image

It turned out very good .... eventually. After working out how to apply an image as a background and also let me change how strong the image comes through as a background

The biggest problem was working out how to join all 3 images into one using just paint.net, which I couldn't work out how to do

So, in the end I had to use a stitching program to do that part for me, which still took some effort to line it all up by hand, as auto mode creating what it thought it should like which was all wrong, then save that image, then load that into Paint.net to apply the background

Long winded, and I'd have preferred to do it all in Paint.net without having to use yet more software to do what should have been easy to do, if I knew how !

Is joining images together with Paint.net possible, even better would be able to load in any image size and any image, resize as required and then join multiple images together to create one big image. Which can then be resized as required

I suppose its a manual stitch really. Just a flat image, no need for wraparound or panoramic images
