  1. ^Wow, rather blunt there. You must be learning from Rick :D

Unfortunately, Paint.NET doesn't support SVG files because they're vector images (a bunch of mathematically-placed curves, shapes, and text), and not what is called a "rasterized" image (just a bunch of colored dots). Now, one may think "why don't they just add vectors?", but sadly, it's not that simple. See, Paint.NET was originally programmed to be was to serve as a raster image editor, which means that our fellow programmers would have to basically create a whole new program in order to add this one feature (and believe me, that would take years).

So yeah, click on that link to Inkscape in the post above; it was strictly designed to be a vector editor (so in turn, you'll never see raster image editing on there), also a free download to the public.

  2. I'm running SP2. Why? No actual reason. I installed an SP3 beta, but later uninstalled it, waiting for Windows to update to the official release automatically. Apparently, it never did. And thus far, my installation of XP hasn't been going through problems, and performance is just fine. And normally when I'm on the computer, I'm downloading something, and I don't want to stress out dealing with 10 Kb/sec download for something that isn't going to do much for me in the near future, especially knowing that updating will force me to re-patch uxtheme.dll

I know that in reality it isn't much of a job to download when I get off the computer and re-patch, but in the last year or so, my work's been piling up. I've barely been able to find the time to edit any pictures in Paint.NET (or Photoshop); just do the minimum computer work (for example, upload a 10MB video to YouTube).

  3. I was at Borders the other day, looking at some books and magazines, and I found a special edition of Shutterbug magazine, full of how-tos. I skimmed through the entire magazine and didn't learn a thing. However, I was interested by an article on recomended Photoshop alternatives. Of course, Paint Shop Pro, Aperture, and Lightroom were all there. The last column was about Paint.NET. They used the same screenshot and logo from the getpaint.net homepage*. Though I can't recall what the article said word-for-word, this is what I do recall:

The .NET part of the program's name comes from the Microsoft-born coding system it was fabricated upon. I have gone to a few coding classes myself, and I wouldn't be boasting about using the .NET Framework if I were them. However, Paint.NET gets the job done very well. It comes with a number of Adjustments such as RBG Curves, a Level Histogram, and an HSV modifier. The program also has a variety of useful effects that include Gaussian, Radial, and Zoom blurs, a number of Distortions, a very effective Sharpen effect, and a useful Red Eye remover. Unfortunately, due to copyright limitations, Paint.NET doesn't support PSDs or Photoshop plugins, nor does it allow for custom brushes, but the Paint.NET forums are full of user-made plugins and patches and friendly program support in case you hit a roadblock.

Final Notes: The program is free to download, and comes in a very small package [less than 2MB] as long as you have the .NET framework installed on your computer, which comes with all Vista PCs and most updated XP installations.

*by the way, the logo looks horrible when printed in a magazine

  4. There's a nice little shareware application called STOIK that uses an algorithm called "smart interpolation" to resize images with superior accuracy. I was actually going to suggest implementing an algorithm like that a few months back, but had forgotten about it :)

    Links for the thinker's soul:

Unfortunately [or at least to my knowledge], it's impossible to create a plugin for this because Paint.NET doesn't allow a plugin to resize the canvas. However, that doesn't mean that Rick or Tom can't add that to Paint.NET's resize dialog.

  5. A couple of pictures to stare at:

An idea I've had for a few months, never got to it until about a day ago.

This is a concept for a new forum index UI. The Particle Cloud. The size of the circle is determined by an average of how popular the forum is, posts per day rate, and the number of posts you contributed to it. If by any chance this were to be put into reality, I'd hope that the particles will rotate in a peaceful ambiance.

Yeah, I actually made this before the Pictorium forum :)
