In Paint.NET 2.72: Let the backround layer be transparent Create a new layer Fill the new layer with a dark color Select another color Use paintbrush to draw in the new layer This results in the backround layer being visible in around the edges of the line drawn with paintbrush. The anti-aliasing doesn't seem to take the current layer into account. [edit] Fixed typo
