woohoo! problem solved. off of a hunch i uninstalled windows installer 3.1, and before i re-installed it tried paint.net again and it worked! thanks for all of the help, and who would've thunk it?

i check just to make sure and there isn't a version installed on my computer.

absolutely. it acts like it is about to install, then it says there was an error and the only thing i can do is click finish

i already have .NET installed, but thanks for the effort

i'm runnig XP proffesional with service pack 2. 512 ram, pentium 4 2.8 gHz. about 120g hd, 256 meg video card.

ok now i'm registered. I can't figure it out. it starts to install then instantly says there was an error
