  1. I'm pretty sure that user is a low-level spammer, given the content of their sig (now removed)... But yeah, this here gets locked.
  2. Well, I tested some of yours against the equivalent blend modes in The GIMP - don't have Photoshop to test - and the ones I could test range from pretty close to spot-on. Burn and Color in particular don't seem to mesh luminosity-wise, but others - Dodge, Hue, Saturation, Value (Luminosity) - seem to be right close. I've uploaded a 90% quality JPG as well as a full-quality PNG, in case you want to take a look. JPG (1.37MB) PNG (5.22MB)
  3. I'm pretty sure XP has the Windows Extraction wizard built in as well - every version of XP I've ever used has had it. Right-click on the ZIPped folder, and you should see "Extract All..." in the list there. If you do have to go with a third-party archive management utility, I wholeheartedly second Sarkut's suggestion of 7-Zip - I've been using it for years, and it's brilliant. Nothing against WinRAR, of course, but 7-Zip is legally free forever, and it can handle decompression of a myriad of archive formats, including ZIP, GZIP, RAR, and TAR.
  4. If it would help with the troubleshooting, go for it. As for the problem, I can't say I've seen this at all. If you could link us to the images or place them in a post, that would be great. Also, if you have any of the source PDN files of any of the offending images you could zip up and attach, it may help as well. Further, which version of Paint.NET are you running? Are you noticing the changes in the way 3.36 behaves, or have you recently switched to the 3.5 Alpha from the Preview forum?
  5. Font list lag has been greatly decreased in the upcoming version 3.5, probably due to asynchronous loading of the rendered font preview. I have 985 installed fonts, and in the current 3.5 Beta, the font list is as snappy as any other drop-down.
  6. Paint.NET has online help documentation that covers this and many other basic concepts. You can access it by pressing [F1] in Paint.NET or selecting Help > Help Topics. The page you're looking for is here: http://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/en/L ... Modes.html That checkerboard pattern is the way the program indicates transparency - since computer monitors can't show "blank", a pattern is used to indicate areas of "blankness". If you save your image as a layered PDN or in a format that supports transparency like PNG, those areas will retain their transparency. If you save with a format that does not support transparency, such as JPG, those blank areas will revert to white.
  7. EER: Image editing programs that support this do it by weighting the Alpha layer based upon the distance from the selection boundary. Paint.NET does not currently support soft selections. gokussj: if I'm understanding your question correctly, you should be able to mimic this effect with BoltBait's Gaussian Blur + plugin. You'll have to create your hard Alpha boundary first (you could do this with BoltBait's Transparency plugin by creating your selection and dropping the Alpha of that selection to 0), then run the Gaussian Blur + on the Alpha channel to fade the Alpha evenly from the edges of the selection you created previously. Note that you should run any effects on the layer to which this effect will be applied beforehand. This is pretty much a finishing step, though you can use the Transparency plugin to recover the layer data by increasing the Alpha.
  8. How are you getting your picture into the same canvas - copy/paste? If so, when you paste a region, Paint.NET will both allow you to expand the canvas to fit, and automatically create a temporary bounding box around that region and allow you to manipulate it before you finalize it to the layer. You wouldn't really want to expand the canvas in this scenario, but the manipulation bit should be what you need. So, once you paste your picture in there, choose "Keep Canvas Size" to preserve the original image size. You'll see your picture pop in on the current layer with an outline around it and nubs on each corner. Grab one of those nubs and drag it inward to shrink the size of your picture to fit. You can hold [shift] while doing this to reduce it by equal proportions horizontally and vertically so it doesn't end up looking squashed. Helpful hint: Make sure you paste your image onto a new layer so you can resize and crop it without messing with the black background. To do this, click Layers -> Add New Layer, then make sure that new layer is highlighted in the Layers panel on the side when you paste.
  9. ^^ Thanks to you both. Go right ahead. That's what wallpapers are made for, after all.
  10. Alrighty. It's been ages since I've done any work in PDN, so it was fun getting back into things - had to re-download a few plugins and everything. So, after a bit of work (and two crashes - I'm running the public Alpha, after all), here's my entry. Similar to both flip and Axle, I went with more of the "glow" side of things than the neon sign side, but it turned out just about how I envisioned it before I started, so I'm happy. It's 100% PDN - just the Line/Curve tool, the Twist plugin, and a lot of Gaussian Blur. Enjoy: impulse ^ click for full size [1280 x 720] ^
  11. Hmmm. I'd actually be interested in entering this. One problem: My resolution is 1366x768, so if I were to make a wallpaper that would actually be usable on my screen, I'd be over the width limit. I suppose I could try scaling it down to 1280x720 - depends on how much quality gets lost in the resampling... It's worth a shot. Put me down for "in".
  12. Seriously? 20 views, and you're already getting antsy? You realize that's only 0.0015% of our total membership, right? If you're looking for help with a particular tutorial, post the question in the tutorial thread. If you're looking for someone to type up a complete walk-through of how they make 3D text, then 20 views and no responses is not surprising in the least. Maybe none of the 20 people had a reliable way that they could pass on. Just be patient. In the mean time, perhaps you could give The Rules a read-through. Maybe then you'd see that we have a rule mandating that you wait at least 24 hours before bumping your threads. You could also run "3D text" through the Paint.NET Search - I count 7 or 8 different tutorials on the first page alone. Maybe you'd have better luck with one of the other ones.

  16. Hey Royl, Thanks for taking the time to try and help the thread creator, but we have a [rule=11]rule against Necroposting[/rule]. This thread was last active in June of last year, and the original poster hasn't checked back with this forum since, so there's no way he'll see your answers. Thread Closed
  17. Paint.NET custom search site: http://searchpaint.net/ Search terms used: "Installing Fonts" One of the many tutorial results: http://paintdotnet.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=3393 That should help you along. Make sure you try out the searchpaint.net site in the future - this forum has been around quite a while, so many questions have already been asked and answered.
  18. You may try giving evanolds' Conditional Hue / Saturation effect a try. It's in his plugin pack here: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=27897 It allows you to limit the effect of the Hue / Saturation adjustment to only specific color regions. It really depends upon the starting color of the off-tone metal, but it may help you keep the adjustment off the stones.
  19. You can create the graphics for a website using Paint.NET, but to create a functional website with hyperlinks and such, you actually have to type it up in HTML. Paint.NET does not have anything comparable to Photoshop's slicing feature, but I would advise against using that anyway. As far as animations, it depends upon what kind you're meaning, but you can get those with Animated GIFs, Flash, or Javascript - none of which PDN can do directly, but there is a tutorial around here about using Paint.NET to create Animated GIFs. Our Custom Google Search should help with locating that.
  20. Yeah, yeah it is, and we have a [rule=11]rule about that[/rule]. Also: This phrase is fingernails-on-a-chalkboard to people who actually do programming... Locked
  21. Actually, it's exactly the same in PDN. Make the rectangle selection, switch to the Black Arrow, hold CTRL, then click and drag to lift a copy. Now, once it's been lifted the first time, you're moving the lifted selection, so you can't lift another copy. So, it kinda works, but only once. I'm not exactly sure how it works in PS...
  22. Oh, I fully understand. I always run the search myself with the verbiage used in a post before pointing out the search page to make sure the search turns up appropriate results, and I include a link to the results page for those terms when I do point it out. For this one, I just used the terms you had in quotes in your title, as I figured those were the ones going through your head at the time, and the link to Simon's tutorial was the fourth result. We'll always be happy to point you in the right direction - I just wanted to make sure you knew that we provide an automated feature that can get you to your desired results faster.
  23. I personally use Alpha Masking (tutorial). You could also use the selection tools and feather the result to smooth out the jaggies (tutorial). Next time you have a question, make sure you try searching the forum first with the Google Custom search - that way you won't have to wait for an answer that's already indexed on the first page.
  24. How is it supposed to save a .JPG without flattening the image? JPGs have no layers. I believe he's referring to the application behavior, not the end file. It's just a rewording of the common complaint: PDN flattens all your layers when you save, making you have to Ctrl-Z back to where you were. I understand why it's a common question, though: I don't know of any other graphics app that does this - they'll perform the merge and export internally, leaving the layers intact. Honestly, Paint.NET has been the way it is for as long as I can remember, and I don't know if PDN's innards (or the current plans for PDN4) allow this, or if Rick is even interested in changing it at all.
  25. Well, like oma said, if your "Background" layer is completely opaque - say a photograph you took or something - nothing you place behind it will show up. You'll have to erase those portions on the top layer for the bottom to show through. Does your top layer have transparent bits for the clouds to show through?
