What worked for me is setting paint.net to use integrated graphics instead of my dedicated GPU via nvidia control panel.

they mean this: i have also been looking across the forum for any method to make it dark without needing to add a new dark layer every time i wanna check a mostly light texture (because if im just viewing a monochrome dds for example it makes it impossible to see most detail unless i add a new black layer and move it below, and any kind of edit will make paint.net prompt me to save when i close it, which gets pretty annoying when you wanna look at a lot of files closely). i haven't found a way to disable the save confirmation yet.
