Whenever I try to open a ".dds" file it doesn't open. Simply stating that there is an error in opening.

I have never had this problem before and found it after not using my computer for 3 weeks. I installed the new version and I still have this issue. It also states the file type to be "paint.net image" which has never happened until now.
What's causing these issues and how do I fix them?
