    Problem solved I manually deleted the remaining files in C:\Program Files\paint.net and rebooted Windows. I reinstalled 4.1.6 successfully and all is now working. Thanks for your suggestions anyway BoltBait.

    The Microsoft tool uninstalled Paint.NET 4.1.5 (which was still working despite the failed upgrade to 4.1.6). Unfortunately installing 4.1.6 still fails with the same error.

    I tried installing Paint.NET 4.1.6 and every time I get "Fatal error during installation" (see screenshot). Previous versions installed no problem. I am running Windows 10 (x64) 1809.
