What would be a good way in Paint.net to take an image like the one attached "full_image.jpg", and then turn it into a black and white illustration, like "outline.png". I wouldn't want the background. I know I can remove backgrounds in different ways, but is there some way to "lift" just the main outline out to get an illustration. I know there's no way Paint.net would know how to draw inside the animals, but how could I grab an outline? I will use these in a whiteboard Videoscribe animation. Not looking for perfect, but not clear at all how to approach this. Thoughts appreciated on some way to do this with Paint.net layers, or some other way.

Thank you MJW. Great feature. Thank you Pixey for going so out of your way to make the video. Much appreciated. I am unclear why the multiple layers might have been necessary. I did not see anything darken with the exact replicas on top of each other. Am I missing something?

OK I have tried different variations of what you have suggested, no idea how to make it darker. I open the file, then not sure what steps are next. Make my owner layer. That Merge Layer Down command is greyed out unless I do something first. Not sure if I should duplicate layers. So much appreciated if you say the steps.

Can you give me more detail on what this means? "1. Duplicate the original dog outlines and merge down 2 -3 times."

In the attached simple dog drawing, the lines are a little "choppy" - what is the best method to make those lines fully black? The magic wand does great just highlighting those lines, but then if I try to just do a fill color, it makes the fill color choppy also, maybe because there is white inside the choppiness. Are there one or more easy ways to do this for a perfectly black solid line?

How can I center the selection on the canvas. Been going in circles reading about plugins that might do this, but it seems that it only centers the item in the selection. I want to center the selected object in the center of the image. I can use another layer if it helps. Are there clear instructions on this?
