The Gradient tool makes it possible to preview any blending mode. But suppose I decide I like a particular blending mode and would like to accomplish it through layering instead of altering the existing layer. Why not have a "Save to New Layer" or "Apply using New Layer" button, which would create a new layer above the current one, apply the chosen blending mode to it, and fill it with the previewed gradient? The Finish button, if it became confusing, could be renamed "Save to This Layer" or "Apply on This Layer".
