Thank you, I didn't select all.

I don't want to duplicate the layer, I want to copy the painting on the layer and add it to my clipboard.

I'm trying to follow this tutorial: http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/26860-glossy-metallic-text/ I can't copy a layer. When I select a layer, I click Edit -> Copy, but it's greyed out and I can't click it.
