How do you make the background of the swirls transparent? I used magic wand on the background and CTRL + X but it gets rid of the entire thing!

I know a bit (not a lot) about paint.NET. I've tried making avatars and signatures but they always come out horribly. It's for an anime forum, so it's anime avatars & signatures. Here is what I've done so far: They don't look good enough. I want to make swirls around it like this: Can you help me?
