Will the plugins I have installed in 3.5 transfer to 4.0?

Many should be compatible, you have to try them and see.

i played a bit with copy + paste selections (ctrl-c ctrl-v)

somtimes you see a short flicker next to the past position

other times you get a ghost selection (or what ever you may call it) next to the pasted field

you can wipe them away with the cursor or by changing the pic

i even had those ghost lines in the grey room outside the canvas

Absolutely love a lot of the new features with pdn4. Just wanted to post a few bugs I have run into so far.

1. I've noticed that if I use the magic wand tool to make a selection and then adjust that selection using the awesome new tolerance setting that once I am done adjusting the tolerance I cannot press the delete key in order to actually delete the selection until I've clicked on the magic wand tool on the left sidebar again. It doesn't happen every time however it does intermittently not work.

2. I've had a lot of trouble moving small selections around, mainly because I always end up rotating the image on accident instead of moving it. There are a few small selections that I have been completely unable to move by clicking and dragging, for example I made a new image 200x10 and was only able to move it using the arrow keys, using the mouse ended up rotating the image every time.

3. I've also run into 3 program crashes so far. I have attached links to the pastebins for them, I wish I could give a reproducible error for them but I'm not honestly sure what I did to cause them.

Hey Rick. I've got a weird thing going on where I duplicate a layer and then merge down and then I undo it and the top layer (the duplicated layer) has changed from "Normal" to "Xor". It's only with this one image though. Now the program has crashed--but it hasn't crashed. I clicked "restart paint.net" and then I went back to working on my image as if nothing had happened. Here's what was in my crash log folder (I'm not sure why there were three):

http://pastebin.com/1gXZyisp

http://pastebin.com/uUSR277S

http://pastebin.com/8wCHhfEq

Also, when I try to say this image as a JPEG, it saves in black and white.

Okay, enough whinging. The speed of complex selections is sssoooooo much better in pdn4 and I really like the direction you're taking with the new UI.

Another bug to report. Sometimes the bottom statusbar progress bar says there permanently regardless of future usage in effects or saving.

I don't understand what you mean by "right click and nibble". Right clicking on a gradient causes it to invert the color assignment between the two handles. You'll have to show me a video.

In previous versions of paint.net, you could invert the gradient in transparency mode so that instead of making the center of a radial gradient opaque, the center was transparent and the outside was opaque. This allowed you to use the gradient tool as, effectively, a soft eraser by using it repeatedly around the edges of an object ("nibbling" at the edges).

Now, when you invert the colors of the gradient with the right mouse button, it switches the colors being used to determine how transparent to make the gradient, but doesn't invert the gradient itself.

@welshie: for now, just set both colors to completely transparent.

The gradient tool was much easier to control than the eraser in particular situations. While I do like the eraser tool a lot, using the gradient is really nice because it allows you to change the size of the erasure very quickly (instead of holding down a bracket key a long time, you just click and drag). It has its place in my (and welshie's) toolkit.

Speaking of the eraser tool, it seems transparency of the color no longer affects the eraser. Is this intentional?

Rectangle select does not accurately report its selected area:

xe4HsVi.png

The behavior always occurs in Replace mode, and in all modes such as Add and Subtract when the entirity of the rectangle being dragged is above everything already selected. There are some other weird behaviors but I suspect they're from the same root cause and won't bother explaining the exact (more complicated) repro steps unless necessary.

Fixed

The font on the Save dialog is not the same as the rest of the application. See image

Fixed -- paint.net 4.0 will now use the user/system text rendering setting, instead of always using Grayscale/ClearTypeNaturalSymmetric.

Using the bracket [ ] keys to increase works for singles both up and down, but the increase by 5 only works increasing the number, not decreasing it.

My bug is actually also present in pre-4.0, but I'll post it anyway:

When you make a selection with your left mouse button, you can also press the right mouse button to drag the selection (which is a neat little easter egg). However, if you let go outside of the window, paint.net thinks you are still pressing your left mouse button causing your selection to change shape if you move your mouse around although you aren't pressing any mouse anymore.

Hello.

Paint.NET's selection tool sometimes selects just half of a pixels column.

Here's a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/5qk44BU.png

It happens on both 4.0 public alpha releases. Using Windows 7 x64.

That should be fixed in the next update.

Hi Rick,

I joined this Alpha test so you have feedback from a user with German keyboard layout and OS settings. Here's my bug report.

Bugs:

  • After installation, the program language is German, but in the settings, the drop down is "English". It behaves correctly once it's set to the correct language.
  • When entering text, the right curly bracket cannot be typed. This bug has been around in v3.5, too. It is likely related to the German keyboard layout, where you type } by hitting "[Alt Gr]+[0]" (normal 0, not the numpad 0). "Alt Gr" (alternate graving) again is a compound of Ctrl+Alt, so paint.net mistakes "Alt Gr+0" for Ctrl+0 and resets the zoom level.
  • The saturation bar of the "Hue / Saturation..." dialog contains all colours which makes it hard to see the effect. I'd recommend to use the color that the hue bar points at.
  • Rotationzoom: the layer is not reset when you doubleclick on the trackball.

Consistency faults and typos when the language is set to German:

  • View menu: Shortcuts of "Zoom in" and "Zoom out" use "STRG", whereas all other commands use "Strg".
  • Adjustments menu: "Hue/Saturation..." contains no spaces, whereas other captions do have spaces.
  • Hue/Saturation dialog's brightness bar has a scale, whereas the Brightness/Contrast dialog has not.
  • Forms: As the pentagon is translated "Pentagon", the hexagon should be translated as "Hexagon" and not "Sechskant".
  • Forms dropdown: "Shape-Umriss zeichnen" should just be "Umriss zeichnen"
  • The overlay mode dropdown is not consistent with the identical dropdown of the layer properties. The one in the layer properties is translated well.
  • Edit menu: "Copy Merged" is translated as "Kopie zusmmengeführt", which should be at least "zusammengeführt", but actually it is not quite understandable, and I'd suggest "Kopieren aus allen Ebenen"
  • Edit menu: "Erase selection" should be "Auswahl entfernen", or at least "Ausgewähltes Objekt entfernen".
  • Layers menu: "Rotationszoom..." should be "Rotation / Zoom..."
  • Layers menu: "Layer Properties..." needs to be "Ebeneneigenschaften..."
The current translation is horrible and not actually German ;) It reads like word by word translation (like "Select you firstly the eyes with the selection tools, to a perfect result to get.").
  • Vignette dialog: "Dichte" should be renamed into "Deckkraft".
  • Pencil Sketch dialog: "Größe der Bleistiftspitze" should be "Dicke der Bleistiftspitze"
  • Oil Painting dialog: "Pinselgröße" should be "Pinseldicke"
  • Radial Blur dialog: "Tipp: Niedrige Qualität ist zur schnellen Vorschau, für kleine Bilder oder kleine Winkelwerte geeignet. Hohe Qualität ist für große Bilder oder große Winkelwerte geeignet." (several typos and mediocre description)
  • Motion Blur dialog: "Drehung" should be "Winkel" like used in all other dialogs
  • Effects menu: "Unschärfe vergrößern..." (lowercase)
  • Bulge dialog: "Gewölbt" (the trackbar label) should be "Wölbung"
  • Tile Reflection dialog: "Biegung" should be "Wölbung"
  • Crystalize effect dialog: "Willkürlich anordnen" should be "Zufällig anordnen", "Übersäen" should be "Neu verteilen"
  • Frosted Glass dialog: "Minimaler Punktradius" and "Maximaler Punktradius"
  • Polar Inversion: "Offset" should be "Mitte"
  • Dents dialog: "Zufallsrauschen" should be "Zufällig anordnen", "Übersäen" should be "Neu verteilen"
  • Settings dialog: "Aktuelles" should be "Updates", or "Aktualisieren" if German is required (but "updaten" is a common German term by now)
  • Settings dialog / Aktuelles: "Beim Start von paint.net automatisch nach Updates suchen" and "Auch nach Vorabversionenen (Betaversionen) von paint.net suchen"

I hope this helps. Rock on!!! :D

Chris

1 -- Yup, I have a bug filed for this.

2 -- I'm going to remove the Ctrl+Alt+0 shortcut key. The official key is now Ctrl+0 anyway.

3 -- I like this idea

4 -- Already fixed the for the next alpha!

As for the translation stuff, I'm still not sure how I want to handle edits here. I'd prefer a system where I can toss the RESX files into a shared collaboration area, and then just pick up the community's edits anytime I go to release a new build. Thoughts?

A community translation wiki, perhaps?  I like the idea, despite not being a translator.

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.

You blogged about providing your own translations with a clever bit of kit you developed...

Is that going nowhere? Seems a shame....
