hurple
I've read through what I can find in the forums, I've uninstalled/reinstalled, checked I have the files in the Paint.net and system32 directories, run the repair utility, and the program STILL crashes everytime I use "Open With" or try to save a file. It worked on Saturday, not on Sunday. The things I did inbetween that may have had an impact? I ran Advanced System Care 6, Wise Care 365 and SlimCleaner and installed The Sims 3. I need this program running, it's one of the top 5 most used programs on my PC, and is important enough that if we can't get it working through troubleshooting here, I will have to resort to a reload of my PC... and I don't want to do that. midora
The error happens during saving the thumbnail of the image to open in a memory stream (as PNG). This stream will then be written to the next MRU (Most Recent Used?) entry in the registry (\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Paint.NET). There maybe a problem with the PNG encoder used by GDI+ in your system or the registry is somehow corrupted.
hurple
Ah! Thank you! And, since I had run some registry cleaners between the program working, and not... it probably is a registry problem. Now all I have to do is figure out how to fix that. eek! hurple
Been digging through the backups made during the PC cleaning, and am not finding anything that jumps out as "this should be put back" and I hate to restore the entire thing, because there were about 15,000 items cleaned out of it. Any tips or pointers or clues what to look for? Alternatively, could I install and run a portable version of Paint.net? Is there one?
hurple
I have tried restoring the registry. I tried installing a new .net (4.5). I even tried a Startup Restore of Windows. Still getting the error. Plus, now my anti-virus won't run either. Seriously, my PC is a brick without this program... Absolutely useless to me. Anything else I can try before resorting to yet another wipe/reformat/reload?
hurple
Restoring to a point prior to all these issues did not work either. I tried reinstalling .net 3.5 and 2.0 and neither would install. Please, somebody help! I don't want to have to do a full reload... Please... Ego Eram Reputo
I think we have established that this is a system problem and not a Paint.NET issue. hurple
That's funny... no other programs bomb. Sounds like an issue with this one to me. But... wow. just. wow. Ego Eram Reputo
I tried reinstalling .net 3.5 and 2.0 and neither would install. Paint.NET is not famous for stopping the installation of the .NET framework. Your problem is wider than this application. There maybe a problem with the PNG encoder used by GDI+ in your system or the registry is somehow corrupted. This was suggested by someone who knows a great deal about Paint.NET and Windows. Neither suggestion is related to Paint.NET, so I don't know how you justify getting miffed when I suggested seeking advice from another source. If this is your attitude to people taking the time to try and help you - then don't let the door hit you on your way out. <locked> ebook: Mastering Paint.NET | resources: Plugin Index | Stereogram Tut | proud supporter of Codelab plugins: EER's Plugin Pack | Planetoid | StickMan | WhichSymbol+ | Dr Scott's Markup Renderer | CSV Filetype | dwarf horde plugins: Plugin Browser | ShapeMaker
Rick Brewster
Ok so you ran some "registry cleaner" that went and deleted a whole bunch of stuff. Now Paint.NET doesn't work ... and you're blaming Paint.NET? That's funny... no other programs bomb. And yet, just a little bit earlier you said ... Plus, now my anti-virus won't run either. Face, meet palm. Registry cleaner = snake oil. Now that you know that, you can reformat and reinstall Windows and get back on your feet instead of getting mad at us for not fixing your broken PC that you broke. Jeez. Talk about self-entitlement.
