Aislin
Hi everyone, From what I have heard was a more detailed tutorial necessary for those who were trying my portrait painting tutorial. So, here I made a tutorial with loads of pictures, hoping you will be able to do these portraits as well.. Because it takes me about 20 hours to do one portrait, which is a bit toooo long for a tutorial and I don't have that much of time, I just show you a part of it, I made a hand as example. All my portraits are done in the same way as I show you here with just one hand. If you like it more difficult, or, if you think you are ready for a more difficult tutorial like this, CLICK HERE tools used in this image: black paint white paint black and white pencil sketch pencil tool brush tool gaussian blur add noise transperancy (clouds for the background) line tool selection tools 1-2-3 Open a picture - duplicate - black and white - pencil sketch OR ink sketch (whatever you prefer) - remove background - add new layer under the sketch - make it black or grey or so - Add a new layer between the black/grey background and the sketch - Paint the hand in middle tones (tones between the highlights and lowlights) - delete OR make the original invisible - add a new layer - use the line tool to create small lines around the hand The sketch and the lines are only a GUIDE, to see if you are on track Layers: Sketch Lines Basic hand Black background Original 4-5-6 Add a new layer called shadows on top of the basic middle tones hand - add a new layer on top of shadows - paint a black line where shadow is needed - Gaussian blur - remove black shadow from places it doesn't need to be ( as seen with the highlights at step 15/16 - merge layer down to shadows Every time you want to add a shadow or a highlight, do it on a new layer and merge it down when you are satisfied about that highlight or shadow! Layers: Sketch Lines Shadows Basic hand Black background Original 7-8-9 Add a new layer called Highlights - add a new layer on top of highlights - paint some white where the highlights should be - gaussian blur - remove where needed as seen in steps 15/16 - merge layer down to highlights - add a new layer on top of Shadows and paint some more black for shadows If the shadows are too dark OR the highlights are too light, use the transparency! Layers: Sketch Lines Highlights New layer Shadows Basic hand Black background Original 10-11-12 Gaussian Blur - add new layer - paint more black for shadow - Gaussian blur again - merge layers down to the shadow layer - use transparency if needed Layers: Sketch Lines Highlights New layer Shadows Basic hand Black background Original 13-14-15 add a new layer - paint white for highlights - Gaussian blur - transparency if needed - erase highlight where needed (look closely at the pictures 15 and 16) Layers: Sketch Lines New Layer Highlights New layer Shadows Basic hand Black background Original 16-17-18 Gaussian blur at low level between 1 and 10 or so - make the Lines layer invisible - add a new layer called black lines - use the line tool to create black lines at the dark sides of the hand as seen in image 17 - some lines are selected and used transparency on as seen on image 18 Layers: Sketch Lines black lines Highlights Shadows Basic hand Black background Original 19-20-21 Add a new layer called white lines - create some white lines with the line tool on the highlighted edges- create some more shadow and highlights as in step 11 to 17 Layers: Sketch Lines white lines black lines Highlights Shadows Basic hand Black background Original 22-23-24 Add a new layer called Nails - paint the nails in a lightgrey and white-ish color as seen on the pic when enlarged - Add a new layer on top of it and paint a little black on the bottom of each nail for some shadow - blur and transparency - Merge layer down to Nails - add a new layer and paint a little white, also blur, transparency and merge down - add a new layer on top of black lines - create some black lines with the line tool at the shadowy places of the nails - use transparency - merge layer down Layers: Sketch Lines white lines black lines Highlights Shadows Nails Basic hand Black background Original 25-finished Paint with a very thin tip some black lines for the wrinkles - high transparency level - flatten - Done Edited November 6, 2011 by Aislin 1 Websites Flickr Gallery Second Life Arts Ais Digi Paintings Tutorials Digital hand painting Digital portrait paitning Second Life Picture editing
barbieq25
Aislin - what a lot of work! It looks super...even if people just get an idea of how to do the shadows & highlights. You've done a great job. A big pat on the back for you. Knowledge is no burden to carry. April Jones, 2012 Gallery My DA Gallery

Pixey
Hi @Llcoup - Yes, Ailsin is not on this forum much now, due to the fact she got an Apple, which is not compatible with PDN and I guess she's removed the tutorial from Flicker. However, her other tutorial which is pretty close to the hand one ..... just a bit more difficult, ...... is still up and running see here. It will give you the general idea of the shading and the technique. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.Amy: But how did it end up in there? The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.
