Paint.NET v3.5.5 is now available

As usual, there are two ways to get it:

1. Direct download from the website, http://www.getpaint.net/ . There is no need to uninstall your old version; that will be taken care of automatically.

2. Use the built-in auto-updater. You can either wait a few days for the update to be offered to you, or you can go to the Utilities menu and then click on Check for Updates.

What's new since v3.5.4:

  • Fixed the bug where saving as 8-bit PNG/GIF/BMP wasn't always working, usually with larger images.
  • Improved the performance of the Gaussian Blur effect by 30-40%.
  • Improved the performance of all the layer blending modes by 15-30%.
  • Improved the performance of zooming with the mouse wheel on dual-core Intel Atom systems.
  • Updated to support .NET 4.0 if no other version of .NET is installed.
  • Reduced download size from 4.8MB down to 3.5MB.
  • Fixed a small error in the Chinese translation.

Please note that Service Pack 3 (SP3) is now required for Windows XP users. Also, Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now required for Windows Vista users. If you do not have these installed, then the Paint.NET installer will open the appropriate download page on Microsoft's site.

Main page still shows the 3.5.4 release date (25th Feb) btw! Is there a way to make PDN use .NET framework v4 rather than 3.5 SP1 if both are installed (when deploying via MSI/GP)?

Not for me. You are most likely looking at an old page your computer has in its own memory. Try to refresh by pressing F5

I just fixed it about 10 seconds ago :) Thanks Bungle.

Not in any automatic way. You probably don't want to do this.

Given that the 3.5.4 release was no longer showing, I knew it wasn't a cache :) Rick sorted now anyway so all good!

I'll trust that you say we're best not doing that then!

Try right clicking on Paint.NET and running as admin. I wonder why it does that?

Paint.NET shouldn't require elevation to run. I wonder if there was an install error?

I always run PdN as admin so I can save anywhere I want.

i allways run pdn as admin too so maybe it is just a uac error nothing serious tho

You really shouldn't...

Gah, looks like I'm stuck on 3.5.4 forever; I'm running XP SP2 and can't upgrade (IT policy). I noticed this when using paint.net today and the autoupdater blew up with a version error.

Is there a particular reason why SP3 is now required? None of the items in the changelog scream "SP3 needed".

Presumably some libraries were removed... Is it possible to get a copy of the installer that doesn't have those libraries removed?

Killing support for everyone running SP2 doesn't seem worth it to save 1.3MB.
