Save as... bug with repro

Recommended Posts

OS: Windows 7

Paint.NET: 3.5.2

Repro:

1. Open a JPG file. (somefile.jpg for example)

2. Modify the image (not required, but part of actual work flow)

3. Select File > Save as...

4. Click the existing file in the Save as dialog. (click 'somefile.jpg')

Note: The "File name" field should now show 'somefile.jpg' as the name to use.

5. Change the "Save as type" drop-down to PNG.

Note: The "File name" field should now show 'somefile.png' as the name to use.

6. Click "Save".

Result:

Windows warns that 'somefile.jpg' already exists and asks if you want to replace it. It seems Paint.NET is still trying to use 'somefile.jpg' as the file name, despite what the "File name" field shows.

Expected:

Paint.NET should use the 'somefile.png' file name shown in the "File name" field.

This is reproducible on my system, following the steps he listed. It occurs anytime you select the filename in the save as dialog and then select a different filetype to save as. It doesn't seem to matter which initial filetype you choose, if you select the original file in the dialog of the save as you will save it as the original filetype regardless of which filetype you choose afterward. I run WinXP on this system. Edit: PDN 3.5.2

On my XP system with PdN 3.5.2:

The Save As... window initially shows the original filename without

the extension showing in the File Name box.

Clicking on a thumbnail results in a filename with extension

showing in the File Name box.

Using the example given, I then place the mouse cursor in the File Name

box to the right of "somefile.jpg" and backspace four times.

It now shows as "somefile"

I can now save as PNG now without the warning notice.

====================

On my Vista system, the file extension doesn't show in the File Name box.

To eliminate the error message, I have to remove the filename and re-type it

or hit Cancel and do Save As again.

Repros here, opened a file, Save As..., selected a different file, then the original and changed filetype to png.

Clicking save causes a dialog saying that the original file exists.

Win7 x64 and PDN 3.5.2

Ok. That repros, thanks!

I think I have a fix for Win7/Vista. It will take a bit of testing to make sure I haven't broken something else in the process.

However, it may not be possible to fix this for XP. This is the same behavior that has existed forever, mind you.
