Checkerboard!?

Okay, I am trying to copy an image onto another image, and when I magic wand it and cut it a checkerboard comes up. But people say put another layor, but I don't get it. Can anyone help? :?:

The area that is a checkerboard is transparency. That means in that area, everything is deleted in every layer. If you don't want that to appear, try making a new layer under everything.
