Exception details:

System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the registry key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Paint.NET' is denied.

It isn't Paint.NET. This is saying that you do not have sufficient authorization to access the registry under the account you are using. If you are running as an administrator, you may have to go to that key and set the permissions manually.

This error pops up sometimes even with Vista or XP. I doubt it's a Win7 issue.

Oh, I'm sure it isn't specific to Win 7. I've had to break the security on registry entries just to install SP3 on some of the XP machines we have at work. It just seems to happen randomly.

Well then just delete it (the reg key). Should pick up the default permissions next time it's created.

OK will give it a try when i get home - thanks.

  • 4 months later...

I was having the same problem or similiar, Paint.NET would install on my Win7 Beta Build 7000.

After trying different stuff I installed one version down, so not 3.36 but 3.35 and it working fine!

Must be some code in the new version giving Win7 a hard time.

Try installing an older version and let us know what you get. Messing with the registry is never realy a good idea.

Greetings

Corleone

System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the registry key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Paint.NET' is denied.

Your problem is not Paint.NET, it's you as a user. Your registry is blocking you.

1) Log in as an admin and try again

2) look up security settings for the registry.

Also look here as it not the 1st time your problem has hit someone. Even XP can have a bad registry.

Windows 7 setup is very close to Vista. I don't even think Rick will need to make a version for Windows 7 only. I am running Paint.NET on Windows 7 with no problem and it on a system that does not even come close to the min specs for Windows 7.

PS: If any of what i said been said sorry but I only got 5 mins to get out the door to work before the truck shows up for drop offs and pick ups.
