1 Day I was thinking: Hmm...I wanna draw some realistic looking animals.

An image of a Fox's tail poped into my mind.

How can I do that with PDN??

How?How??

My method took God knows how many steps to just get the 1st patch of fur.

I don't believe anyone wanna read a tut with 40+ steps just to get started.. :?

After seeing mustang maverick's Fur/Hair Tutorial, Using the Jitter plugin was a good method..

And gave me some ideas on how to make the steps much shorter! Yet having good result.

This tut is not gonna teach you how to draw a tiger.

It should teach you how to make the textures & patterns to draw many other things!!

Such as:

12

EDIT: This was made using the method in this tut.

3

OK! enough talk lets get started!

Plugins you will need:

Jitter

Sin Waves

1. 800x600

Add new layer.

Use :RectangleSelectTool:Rectangle Select Tool to select an area like image below.

Fill with white color. Draw lines like image too.

I have fill the background with green for you to see better :)

4

2. :GaussianBlur: Gaussian Blur (R=22)

5

3. Use Jitter (D=-100)

6

4. Distort as you see fit. I used Sin waves. Then :PolarInversion: Polar Inversion.

You can colorize the image at any point, I have done it in this step.

7

8

Done!!

Can you see the patches of fur/hair/grass in you head already?

Easy, wasn't it? :)

Of course, this is still a long way from a tiger. But that's how I started ?

Comments & Questions welcome.

Show me what you made!

Have fun!

Looks great Ash!

Another great tutorial!

Thanks for the credit. I appreciate that.

EDIT:

My first rendering using this technique.

I wanted the point of view to be from laying down in a field.

That was the intention at least.

NightScene.png

Ash I used a minute amount of motion blur on the grass. It seemed to give the grass a bit more 'direction'.

(Just a suggestion.)

uhhh, for the first part, couldnt you just use a barcode?

Depends on how many darker "spots" you want.

I tried barcode 1st FYI. But this you can make easier adjustments.

@blooper101: It is never easy when you wanna make nice looking stuff...Just think how many steps for me to finish the tiger? :?

@Shuff: Thanks.

@MM: Thanks and looking good so far :)

You might wanna change the night sky to a deep blue, more stars & maybe a bit more lights on the grass..the moon is up after all :)

This way you get to see all the objects in the scene.

Good job!

Can you explain how you make the tiger ore some other figures

Use the patches of fur you now have after finishing the tut, and just piece whatever animal you want together.

This is, after all a tut on making the textures, not "how to draw a tiger"

Everyone should try making something different with the texture, not everyone drawing a tiger.

Like the Grass in the 1st post ^^^^^.

This, in my opinion, goes for all tutorials. Don't just follow the tutorial to learn how to make the fire, or to make the tiger. Follow it to learn the techniques used to make the fire or tiger.

:)

If only all the people posting all those nearly-identical tutorials could learn that concept... *sigh*

Ash this tutorial is amazing! :D :!:

@madhatterl7: Looks awesome! Is that 100% Paint.net? :o

I played around making grass and what is supposed to resemble a hedgehog. Not finished as you can see, but I thought I would post it anyway.

pinnsvin.png

Grass kinda looks like seaweed or something... :?

Thanks :D

I am liking it already :) Keep at it!

For the grass, Use less distort value, then it should look more like grass and not seaweed as you called it.

Thanks, I tried out your tip, and must say I'm much more happy with the grass now

The eyes and nose aren't that good though.

th_pinnsvin2.png

Getting better :)

The eyes...Maybe because hedgehog's eyes are not like human's.

I think it should work better if you make a "glassy looking shiny black/dark brown sphere"

I'm really glad that some of you find this tut useful and are really trying to make something out of it. :)

+10 points for the few of you in my book :D
