.ai File Format issues.

I'm a newcomer to the Paint.NET universe. I was trying to load up a .ai file and found that Paint.NET doesn't support it. I tried running a search for a plug-in, but couldn't find anything myself. So is there something I missed in my search for a plug-in to help .ai support, or will I be forced to get a copy of Photoshop? (Any other programs that may let me open the file would be useful as well).

Nope, sorry, Paint.NET doesn't support Illustrator files. It's not well suited for them, honestly. There's another free program that people recommend, although the name escapes me. InkScape, I think?

"Inkscape" is the name, yes. :-)

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.
