  2. Drawing with brush dynamics (similar to Krita/Photoshop), but within Paint.Net! Everything in the pic below was drawn with it except the letter shapes Additional thanks to TechnoRobbo, Null54, Pyrochild, Toehead, and xchellx for valuable code contributions Using Dynamic Draw 1. Pick a brush image (and add your own under Settings - Brush section -> Brush Image Locations) 2. Change settings (don't forget you can scroll down for more settings) 3. Draw on the canvas (with some tablet support for huion/wacom via WinTab) You'll see explanations & keyboard shortcuts in a tooltip as you hover over settings. Note: If you're working with multiple layers, you can merge down all the layers below to copy it to the clipboard and use it as the background in a right-click menu on the canvas itself. Installing Extract the Dynamic Draw folder to the Effects folder of your paint.net installation, which for me is at C:/Program Files/paint.net/Effects. Leave it in the folder. Then restart paint.net. What's New? changelog new Added an effect dropdown to select and apply filter effects using the brush. Certain incompatible effects are blacklisted. tweak Significant speed increases for larger brush drawing due to parallelization. 4. BoltBait GPU Accelerated Plugin Pack (for Paint.NET v5.0+) NOTE: If you're looking for my plugin pack for Paint.NET v4.3.12, go here, or Paint.NET v3.5.11, go here. If you're in here downloading the 5.0 version of Paint.NET, you're probably familiar with my plugin pack. I have spent the better part of the last 6 months rewriting most of my plugins from scratch... taking advantage of all the new toys @Rick Brewster has given us plugin authors in Paint.NET v5.0. He has completely rewritten the Effect system within Paint.NET v5.0 (Don't worry, all your favorite classic effects will still work.) adding new capabilities for the IndirectUI system and providing access to the GPU so that our effects can run VERY fast! What's New: I have rewritten more than 25 of my plugins so that they will now be GPU accelerated! While I was in there, I also added cool new features. Be sure to check your favorite plugin! Download: Download Donate How to install these plugins. Download Contents: The following effects have been GPU accelerated Adjustment > Black and White Plus Adjustment > Color Balance Adjustment > Combined Adjustments Adjustment > Transparency Artistic > Dream Fill > from Clipboard Fill > from File Object > Apply Alpha Mask Object > Bevel Object Object > Feather Object Object > Inner Shadow Object > Outline Object Object > Switch Alpha to Gray (This is Create Alpha Mask) Object > Switch Gray to Alpha Photo > Level Horizon / Plum Bob Photo > Meme Maker Photo > Photo Adjustments Photo > Remove Dust Photo > Vignette Plus Render > Calendar Creator Render > Flames Selection > Bevel Selection Selection > Blur Selection Edge Selection > Feather Selection Selection > Inner Shadow Selection > Outline Selection Text Formations > Text Fun Factory Object > Drop Shadow Plus The following effects are classic flavor* Adjustment > Hue / Sat+ Flip Horizontal Flip Vertical Artistic > Oil Paint+ Artistic > Pastel Blurs > Gaussian Blur+ Color > Complementary Colors Object > Paste Alpha Photo > Seam Carving Photo > Sharpen Classic Photo > Sharpen Landscape Render > Chart / Graph Render > Dimensions Render > Gradients Render > Grid / Checkerboard Render > Polygon / Stars Stylize > Edge Detect Classic Stylize > Floyd-Steinberg Dithering Outdated plugins removed from my pack Adjustment > Temperature / Tint (now built-in) Text Formations > Creative Text Pro (now Text Fun Factory) Text Formations > Outlined / Gradient Text (now Text Fun Factory) I made a new Drop Shadow plugin! This pack also includes 57 shapes and 2 palettes. These are the ones I use. *Please post a vote for which of my "classic" effects you'd like to see GPU accelerated next. Screenshots of Various Effects: Outline Selection and Outline Object got some new features and the outlines look MUCH better than previous versions. Check out some of these new features: Bevel now has a shadow angle free choice and a hard edge option. Calendar Creator now has holiday highlighting. Enter your favorite birthdays! Many of my plugins utilize tabs for making the UI much smaller than before. For example, Text Fun Factory separates the UI into basic functions: The Photo > Level Horizon effect utilizes 2 tabs, one for marking the horizon and one for finalizing your image: Some old favorites have been rewritten for GPU acceleration: Enjoy! Also, for you luddites that refuse to use the installer, here's a zip file with all the DLL's in it: BoltBaitPack610DLLs.zip How to install Paint.NET plugins. NO SHAPES FOR YOU! How about giving this post an up vote ♥️?

  5. Version 1.1 (Requires Paint.NET v4.2.9+) Creative Text Pro takes the fonts on your system and uses them to create professional looking 3D text. The available controls allow you to customize your text to infinite possibilities! If you have ever wondered how to make 3D text in Paint.NET... Or, how to make gold text in Paint.NET... Or, how to make chrome text in Paint.NET... this is the plugin for you! Creative Text Pro includes 6 black-and-white algorithms that can be adjusted and/or colorized, including: Normal, Subtle, Dark, Chrome, Light, and Bright. The lighting direction for highlights/shadows on the letters is completely adjustable to any angle. Creative Text Pro also includes 45 seamless textures that can be applied to the text: Those textures can be rotated and the colors adjusted for near infinite possibilities! For example, texture Rust 2 can be color corrected to green for a nice "moss" texture. Turtle can be color corrected to orange for a nice giraffe effect. The Gold Foil texture can be color corrected to purple for a nice purple foil effect... etc. OK, but you said "infinite", where's the rest? Ha! OK, the rest are up to you! The last option in the variation/texture drop-down box is Clipboard. So, any image you have on your clipboard can be applied to the text, rotated, and color corrected. Infinite! The UI has 4 sections Objects Also, if you want to apply the 3D effect to an existing object instead of text, check the box at the top of the UI: Where did my background go? Text should always be rendered to a separate layer, that way shadows can be added behind it and you can move the text where it needs to go. In that light, text rendered by this plugin is placed on a transparent background. You're welcome. How do I add more fonts? Where is my favorite font, it's not listed? Creative Text Pro uses the fonts that are already installed on your system. However, not all of your fonts may be compatible with this plugin, so only those fonts that will work are shown in the font drop-down box. Generally, fonts need to be True Type (TTF) files that support Normal rendering. (Fonts that only support Italics are not included.) Brought to you by: and Download: This is now part of my plugin pack, you can download it there: Go There! Donate Once installed, you will find it in Effects > Text Formations > Creative Text Pro menu. This plugin is professional grade and a ton of time was taken to make it. Won't you consider donating? If you can't afford to donate (I totally understand), how about just a "like" on this post? Source Code: Included here is a stripped down version, just so you plugin authors can see how it works. Hopefully, this code will inspire you to do something great! Credit: I could never have written this plugin by myself. So, many thanks goes out to the development team: @BoltBait wrote the plugin @welshblue supplied the creative algorithm, the icon, and many seamless textures @toe_head2001 supplied the font filtering code @Ego Eram Reputo supplied valuable feedback, encouragement, and testing Enjoy. 😎

  7. The RULES Also read the: Pictorium Guidelines before posting in The Pictorium Tutorial Posting Guidelines before publishing a tutorial Tutorial Replying Guidelines before replying to any tutorials You must read these rules, and you must abide by them. They are mandatory. The rules are not 'recommended reading'. They are important for keeping the forum organized, productive, and awesome. We reserve the right to lock posts, delete posts, remove avatars, edit signatures, and ban users for not following these rules, or for any other reason at our discretion. NOTE: All rules except #2 and #22 apply both in the main forum and in private messages. Report violations to a moderator. 0) This rules list is subject to revision and updates. We will try to be as fair as possible about it, however. I'll put the last revision date in the post title for convenience. 1) Before you ask for or about ANYTHING: 1. Read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions), https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/399-frequently-asked-questions-faq/ 2. Search for your answer, http://searchpaint.net/. This URL links to a custom search engine and differs from the forum search function. The custom search is wider and returns more results - it is the preferred search tool. 3. Read the Popular Feature Requests posting. If it's already there, don't ask for it. Seriously. Don't. https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/2940-popular-feature-requests/ 4. Read the Help file, All basic Paint.NET question are answered here. https://www.getpaint.net/doc/latest/ 2) Post in the correct section. For instance, the Plugins and Tutorials sections are STRICTLY reserved for PUBLISHING ONLY. Do NOT post questions in there. Your post will be deleted immediately. If you don't know where to post, you should probably be posting in the General forum. 3) DO NOT SHOUT. We can hear you just fine. Using all capitals is often interpreted as rude, so please don't. 4) You must make sense. Tiping lyk thz iz n0t kewl. 5) You only need one exclamation ! or question mark ? It's really obnoxious when people post like this: "How do I do this ??????????????????" or "That's awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" C'mon people. We get the point just as well if you only use 1 or 2. Thanks. 6) Thread titles must be descriptive and specific -- NOT generic. You need to use descriptive thread titles. The following are examples of thread titles that are NOT ALLOWED: "Help" "Please help" "I need help" "Can you help" "HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!" (if you post like this you WILL be banned) "Tutorial request" "Feature request" "Plugin request" "Looking for..." "Looking for a tutorial / feature / plugin" "Can Paint.NET do this" ('this' is completely ambiguous here) "I'm a newbie" "Hello" "I'm new" also, putting "HELP!" in any title is also not allowed, it's really quite obnoxious. We know you want help, that's why you're posting in the first place. etc. This pollutes the forum with generic threads and makes it impossible to navigate. Imagine if everyone posted with thread titles like this and we had pages full of "Help!!", "Please help", "Please I'm a newbie" or even "Hi" or "Pony" ... it would be stupid. Just like you should be doing with e-mail, write your subject line for the recipient, not the sender. Read here for more detailed info: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20070118-00/?p=28353 (btw, Raymond Chen's blog is excellent, and I recommend reading as much of it as you can!). Here's the important part: from now on, threads with generic titles will be locked and/or deleted. Without warning. This rules posting is your warning. Also, do not put something like this in your thread title: RICK READ THIS THREAD!!! That is extremely rude and annoying. 7) You must be using the latest version of Paint.NET, available here. This is a requirement. If you want to stay with an older version then that is your right, but we cannot help you. If you are unable to upgrade, then please post in the troubleshooting section. This is to avoid posts that go like this: If everyone has the latest version, we can skip all the rigamarole. Pre-release versions, such as alphas and betas, do not count as the "latest version" for this rule. 8) Do not ask for older versions of Paint.NET. This is a corollary to #7, but I'm spelling it out separately anyway. We will not provide download links for them -- you are on your own to find them (hint: try a search engine). Along with this, don't ask about Windows 2000 (or XP, Vista, 7, 8, or 8.1) support. Seriously. You may think you have some new question or insight, and that's definitely possible, but this is not something that will be added back in to a future release of Paint.NET. End of discussion. If you want to complain about this, then don't talk about it here -- just write on your blog or talk to your therapist or something instead, please. 9) Be courteous to others. Constructive criticism is generally welcome and encouraged. Starting fights and being rude is not. However, if your tutorial is really lame, don't be offended when we say as much (By the way, the moderators will generally and almost always follow this rule, but are not required to if circumstance warrants it -- which is at their own discretion.) 10) Do not private message other users with Paint.NET questions. That's what the forum is for! If you PM a moderator with a question like, "How do I crop or something?" then your message will probably just be ignored. Remember, this is a public help forum, meaning anyone should be able to see answers posted to questions; if someone else has the same problem as yours, but it was answered in a private message, they won't be able to find the answer. Also, if the person you've messaged doesn't know the answer, it ends up making your quest for knowledge that much longer. Just post on the boards and be patient, someone will answer your post eventually. 10a) Don't ask another user to email you the answer to a question. In addition to the reasons given above, we're not your personal help desk, and we don't have time to be. Please don't get offended; we're busy people with real world jobs (and this is not that job. For any of us). 11) Don't reply to very old threads. Also known as "reviving" or "resusitating" old/dead threads. Also called "necroposting" (eww). If there has been no discussion in a thread for, say, 3 months ... then it is dead. Do not reply to it -- pretend like it is locked. If you reply to it, then the thread will be immediately locked and your post may be deleted. Please just create a new thread if you have something to say about that subject. However, this rule does not apply to the Tutorials, Pictorium, Plugins, or Grand Theory of Everything sections of the forum. 12) Posting inappropriate images or using inappropriate words is a quick way to get yourself banned. Photographs of people, whether modified or unedited, should not be of a seductive or lecherous nature. "Erotic art" is not permitted. Remember, this is a family-friendly board. Let's keep it that way. If you want to show off that kind of art, then please get an account at Deviant Art. 13) Putting images in your signature is fine, however, annoying, blinking, or especially inappropriate images will be removed (also refer to #14, 15) 14) Avatar size requirements: They must not be wider than 120 pixels, nor taller than 160 pixels. 15) Signature size requirements: The combined size of all images in your signature must not be wider than 500px, nor taller than 150px. There is no specific limit as to the number of lines of text permitted in signatures, as we understand that text can render differently in different browsers, but if you have text in addition to an image of the maximum 150px height, please keep it down to two lines. Ideally, text and images in your signature should be around a 200px combined maximum height. 16) Don't try creating new "official" threads for things. For example, "post all plugin requests here!" If the moderators want to reorganize or officiate things, then we will -- that's our job, not yours. 17) Show off your work in the Pictorium. Don't create a new thread in other forums just to show off your artwork (this includes avatars and signatures). The place to show off is called The Pictorium... https://forums.getpaint.net/forum/16-the-pictorium/ . You may create one thread for your personal gallery there. 18) Do not use the Quote button, Code button, or Spoiler button in your signature. As you can imagine, the mods read TONS of posts. Including any of these features in your signature just slows us way down. 19) Don't ask to be a moderator. 20) Don't feed the trolls. If you notice someone is trolling the forum, don't respond to them. A mod will deal with them soon enough. This includes SPAM posts--don't respond to them. If you see a spam thread just ignore it or click the "Report" link on that thread and a mod will deal with it. 21) Don't create useless polls. Also, don't create polls in any forum except the Grand Theory of Everything forum - and even then we may delete them if they are useless. 22) All forum activity must be in ENGLISH. Except in the Localization section. This includes posts as well as signatures. However, you can use whatever language you want when sending private messages to other forum members. 23) ADVERTISING and SOLICITING are strictly prohibited. This is NOT a place to find artists or developers, either for hire or for volunteer/free. This is NOT the place to advertise your product, company, or community. If you want, you may include a few links in your signature as long as they are small and unobtrusive. See Ash's signature for an example of what is tasteful and acceptable: https://www.getpaint.net/misc/ash_sig.png 24) Do not swear. This includes "ASCII Swearing" where letters are replaced by symbols/numbers in an attempt to get around the autocensor. 25) Do not 'bump' your own thread unless it has received 0 replies and it has been 24 hours since you posted it. You may not bump a thread more than once. ('Bumping' refers to posting simply to get your post moved to the top of the list -- "Is anyone listening?", "I really need some help here!", "Can't anyone help me?", "Help!", "bump", "up", etc.) When bumping your thread, it may be wise to edit the original post to give more details as the usual reason no one responds to a post is because it is too confusing. 25a) Do not "sneaky-bump." Sneaky-bumping is deleting your post and reposting the same message. This is harder for the moderators to notice (hence "sneaky"). Breaking rules out of ignorance is forgivable -- not even the moderators have all the rules memorized! But sneak-bumping is actively attempting to circumvent the rules. It's morally equivalent to spitting in the moderators' faces, and we don't like that. 26) Never 'bump' someone else's thread. 27) Do not "bite" newcomers / newbies. See here for more info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:BITE This also applies to established members. If you want to be rude, do it on another message board. We have no use for it here. "Constructive Criticism" is fine when a user posts in a thread made for that purpose ("rate" threads and the Pictorium), but be helpful. Being rude just to be rude will earn you a warning. 28) No "warez" discussion. Encouraging or aiding in illegal download of software, music, videos, etc. is against forum rules. Hundreds of people work for thousands of hours to program that software, and they deserve to be paid. That's why even discussing warez is against forum rules. You may not encourage others to do it, or tell them how to do so, either by private message or open forum post. Your post will be edited or locked, and you may be banned. If you are running a pirated copy of Windows or whatever, then just keep that fact to yourself. 29) Don't post huge images. Not everyone has an internet connection as fast as yours or a monitor as large, so don't make their pages take 10 minutes to load and don't make them scroll sideways. Keep images no larger than 800 pixels tall or wide. Rule #29 is considered unnecessary. We do recommend users post clickable thumbnails and/or links to externally hosted larger versions of images because the Forum has a modest attachment limit (a total of 10MB per user). 30) Don't post phone numbers. This is to save you from getting robocalls. *) Spam. Any spam posts will be deleted as soon as they are discovered by a moderator. The user will be banned, as will their e-mail and IP address. Depending on the e-mail and IP, their subnet and e-mail domain may also be banned. If you are banned by accident, then please contact a moderator for assistance. (Change Log: September 2nd, 2008 - Rule 28, "no warez talk," re-added. Don't know where it went in the first place... September 3rd, 2008 - Rule 18, spoiler tag now prohibited in signatures, also. 8. Welcome to Paint.NET 5.0! This major update has many performance improvements, new features including pressure sensitivity for pens and drawing tablets, and a brand new effect plugin system with GPU rendering support. Almost all of the built-in effects and adjustments now render using the GPU, greatly improving their performance and quality. To get the update, scroll all the way to the bottom to the big bold "Get the Update" text. What's New Pressure Sensitivity Back by popular demand*, pressure sensitivity is now supported, enabling you to draw beautiful, natural-looking brush strokes (see above). Support for the Windows "pointer" input system (aka "Windows Ink") is required. Most devices support this, including the Surface Pen and various drawing tablets from Wacom, UGEE, and more. Path smoothing, sometimes called stabilization, is now implemented (enabled by default in the toolbar): There is a new spacing property in the toolbar. The default is 15% which does a great job, but sometimes you need finer control. This also enables new styles of drawing, such as the following which was drawn with a spacing value of 200%: The newly rewritten brush engine is supported by all of the brush tools: Paintbrush, Eraser, Clone Stamp, and Recolor. Support for more brush shapes and types, including custom brushes, will be making an appearance in a future update. GPU, GPU, GPU! Paint.NET, since v4.0, has already been using hardware accelerated rendering for drawing the canvas to the screen. In v4.1, GPU acceleration was added to a few effects (blurs, mostly). In v5.0, support for the GPU has been greatly expanded. More of the UI is now using using the GPU, including the Layers and History windows, the ruler, the image list at the top of the main windows, and the UI for the Curves and Levels adjustments. This improves performance, and also helps battery life on laptops. In addition, (almost**) all adjustments and effects now use the GPU, resulting in much higher performance by leveraging Direct2D's imaging and effects system with pixel shaders implemented using Sergio Pedri's @sergiopedri fantastic ComputeSharp.D2D1 library. These effects are now running with full 32-bit floating point precision (128-bits per pixel), which greatly improves the quality of rendering and the accuracy of colors as they move through the processing pipeline. Effect plugins can now use the GPU for rendering as well, and have full access to the Windows graphics libraries Direct2D, DirectWrite, and Windows Imaging Component (WIC). More on that later. (File Type plugins can also use these libraries, but GPU rendering is not supported there.) The Move Selected Pixels tool has been upgraded to use the GPU when the Bicubic sampling option is selected. The performance of this proved to be so good that it is now the default mode (unless you are using software rendering or an Intel HD/UHD GPU, in which case Bilinear is still the default). A new Anisotropic sampling mode has been added, which also uses the GPU. Whether you use Bicubic or Anisotropic is up to personal taste; the former produces a sharper result, while the latter produces a smoother/softer result. (Click for full-size image) Configuration of GPU support is split into two sections: hardware acceleration for UI and the canvas, which can be enabled or disabled, and selection of the GPU that is used for rendering (tools, adjustments, and effects). By default Paint.NET will use what Windows identifies as the "performance GPU" for rendering, which ensures you get the best performance on systems with both an integrated GPU ("iGPU") and a discrete GPU ("dGPU"). Previously, Paint.NET would only ever use the iGPU, so this is a huge performance improvement on laptops with hybrid graphics. The UI/canvas will always use what Windows identifies as the "default" GPU, which is usually the iGPU, and this helps ensure better battery life. Apply Embedded Color Profile Paint.NET does not have a Color Management System (CMS) like Photoshop, Krita, or The GIMP. I'm hoping to add that in a future update, but for now Image -> Apply Embedded Color Profile is a pragmatic solution that will help you make your images look correct. Paint.NET, since v4.2, does a great job at preserving image metadata including EXIF, XMP, IPTC (new in 5.0 thanks to @null54), and color profiles. However, it does nothing with the color profile. If you've ever opened an image and the colors looked wrong inside the app and different outside of it (e.g. in your web browser), this is probably why. This command will convert the image to the sRGB color space and then remove the color profile metadata, enabling you to make edits while seeing the image in the way that it was meant to be seen. Before and after example: (image source) Image -> Resize Improvements Image -> Resize has been updated with new resampling modes: Adaptive and Lanczos. The Bicubic and Bilinear modes have been updated with improved quality, while the old implementation of Bilinear is now called Bilinear (Low Quality) and is akin to linear filtering in 3D graphics engines (only 4 samples per output pixel). Other than Bilinear (Low Quality), Nearest Neighbor, and Fant, these are all powered by Clinton Ingram's @saucecontrol amazing PhotoSauce.MagicScaler library. It produces extremely high quality results, and is also ultrafast. Please note that the Super Sampling mode has been removed. The Adaptive mode produces superior quality, and should be used instead. New Adjustments There are a handful of new adjustments in this release: Exposure, Highlights / Shadows, and Temperature / Tint. These are staples of photo editing that you have previously needed to install plugins for. In addition, the Sepia adjustment has been improved with an Intensity slider. A value of 0 produces grayscale, 50 is equivalent to previous versions of Paint.NET, and 100 is much more saturated. New Effects There's a new Straighten effect, located in the Effects -> Photo submenu, which makes it easy to rotate and automatically zoom an image so that it fits within the canvas without any transparency creeping in along the edges: There's now a built-in Drop Shadow effect, available in the Effects -> Object submenu. With the new Direct2D GPU image processing system, this was very easy to implement, and the performance is fantastic: Bokeh Blur Effect Lastly, Paint.NET now has a very high-quality Bokeh blur effect! This replaces the old Unfocus blur effect (which was Bokeh under a different name), both of which simulate the aesthetic quality of the blur produced by out-of-focus parts of an image. Developed in collaboration with Sergio Pedri @sergiopedri and Mike Pound (as seen on the Computerphile YouTube channel, like this one about Complex Bokeh Blurs), this version of Bokeh has a Quality slider that goes up to 10 instead of the usual 6 that you may have seen in other implementations such as ImageSharp's (further details available on GitHub). This produces an extremely high quality result that eliminates almost all fringing artifacts, even on gamma-corrected images or those with a lot of contrasting edges. Be sure to crank the quality up when you're also increasing the Gamma Exponent property, but be warned: it's a bit of a GPU killer!*** This is available in the Effects -> Blurs menu: New Effect Plugin System There's a brand new, fully modernized system for effect plugins to use. The old system still works, and older plugins are still compatible. However, the new system has a lot of benefits and should be the basis for any new effect plugins. The biggest new feature is hardware accelerated GPU rendering using Direct2D, its effects system, and pixel shaders. The base class for this is GpuEffect, although most plugins will want to use GpuImageEffect (or PropertyBasedGpuImageEffect to leverage IndirectUI) in order to best make use of the graph-based ("node-based") effects and image processing system. There is also GpuDrawingEffect for when you want to issue imperative drawing commands (geometry, text, etc.). If you want to see how to work with all of this, I have written some sample plugins and the source code is available on GitHub. On the CPU side, BitmapEffect is the replacement for the "classic" Effect class, and has some goodies of its own including expanded pixel format support: you can now read the image and its layers, and produce your output, in the pixel format of your choice including BGRA32, PBGRA32, RGBA64, or even CMYK32. Anything other than BGRA32 will eventually be converted back to BGRA32, but for now this enables you to more easily perform rendering at higher precision. Eventually, layers themselves will support these other pixel formats, and this will ensure that your effect is able to read and render at native precision. Effect plugins can now access all layers of the current image. This is a big one! In addition, there's also the ability to retrieve a composite bitmap of the whole image (all layers blended together). Effect plugins can now access the image's metadata, including EXIF, XMP, and IPTC (thanks @null54 for the IPTC support!). This is already being used in an update for @null54's PSFilterPdn plugin. Effect plugins can now render outside of the active selection by using the DisableSelectionClipping rendering flag. This makes it possible to implement effects like drop shadows that are drawn around the selection, not just inside of it. Effect plugins can now add tabs to their UI! IndirectUI-based plugins (e.g. PropertyBasedGpuImageEffect) can now add tabs to their UI in arbitrary configurations. @BoltBait has been using this a lot in his updated plugin pack, and has written a tutorial on how to use it in your own plugins. It's also possible, in your rendering code, to know which tab is active, which is useful when you want to render decorations that you don't include in the final rendering (you'd have a "Finish" tab with any final configuration properties). "Classic" effects (deriving from PropertyBasedEffect) can also use tabs. There's a new Label control which you can use to add text that isn't tied to a property, or even just for adding some whitespace. There's a new ShowHeaderLine property which you can use to remove the horizontal line from the property's header (most of the built-in effects now use this). Drop-down controls can also set Multiline to false so that the label and the dropdown are drawn on the same line. Lastly, there is a new SetTargetWhenSourceEqualsAnyValueRule property collection rule which you can use to implement, among other things, correlations between dropdown and slider controls, as seen in the new Bokeh blur and updated Gaussian Blur effects. Here's a screenshot from @BoltBait's updated plugin pack, which makes great use of tabs and other new IndirectUI features: Effects with custom UI (not IndirectUI-based) can use Direct2DControl to create custom controls using Direct2D, including support for hardware accelerated rendering on the GPU. There is also a Direct2DPictureBox control that you can use to display a static bitmap and render additional content above or below it. Improved Effects and Adjustments Many of the existing effects have been improved and updated, in addition to all being run on the GPU now: Layers -> Rotate / Zoom, technically a distortion effect, now has a Quality slider, a Sampling property, and redone tiling capability. The Tiling checkbox has been replaced with a Tiling Mode dropdown where you can choose between Transparent, Wrap, or Mirror. Setting the Sampling property to Nearest Neighbor, while also zooming in, produces a pixelated and antialiased appearance. Adjustments -> Brightness / Contrast now uses the GPU for rendering. Adjustments -> Hue / Saturation now uses the GPU for rendering. Adjustments -> Posterize now uses the GPU for rendering, and also allows posterization of the alpha channel. Adjustments -> Sepia now uses the GPU for rendering and has an intensity slider. Effects -> Artistic -> Ink Sketch now runs on the GPU and is significantly faster. Effects -> Artistic -> Pencil Sketch now runs on the GPU and is significantly faster. Effects -> Blurs -> Bokeh is a new effect that replaces the Unfocus effect. It uses the GPU for rendering. Effects -> Blurs -> Fragment now uses the GPU for rendering and has improved rendering quality. Effects -> Blurs -> Gaussian Blur has an increased range for its radius property which can now be specified in 0.1 pixel increments. It now also has a Gamma dropdown, Gamma Exponent slider, and a Quality slider. The Gamma dropdown defaults to "sRGB (2.2)" which ensures gamma-correct results. Setting this to "Linear (1.0)" will produces the same results as previous versions of Paint.NET. The Gamma Exponent slider can be used to increase the prominence of brighter regions of the image. Values less than 1 produce a strange color bleeding effect that can be fun. The quality level ranges from 1 to 4. The first 3 correspond to the optimization property of Direct2D's Gaussian Blur effect, while the 4th level is a new, custom implementation that renders at an obscenely high level of quality and improves results with gamma-corrected or gamma-exaggerated rendering. Previous versions of Paint.NET (v4.1 - v4.3) always rendered equivalently to a quality value of 3. Warning: the 4th quality level is a GPU killer*** -- even the fastest GPUs will struggle with this one! Effects -> Blurs -> Motion Blur now has an Edge Mode property to control how pixel samples outside of the image are determined. Effects -> Blurs -> Radial Blur has improved rendering quality, and its quality slider can now be set between 1.0 and 8.0 in steps of 0.1. Effects -> Blurs -> Zoom Blur now uses the GPU for rendering, has improved rendering quality, and a Focus property to control the balance between the foreground and background. It now also has a quality slider thar can be set between 1.0 and 8.0 in steps of 0.1. Effects -> Distort -> Bulge now uses the GPU for rendering, has improved rendering quality, and an Edge Behavior property. Effects -> Distort -> Crystalize now uses the GPU for rendering and has improved rendering quality. Effects -> Distort -> Dents now uses the GPU for rendering, has improved rendering quality, and an Angle property. Effects -> Distort -> Frosted Glass now uses the GPU for rendering, has improved rendering quality, a Diffusion property, and a Randomize button. The Diffusion property controls how pixels are distributed between the Minimum and Maximum Scatter Radius. Lower values will distribute pixels closer to the minimum radius, a value of 1.0 (the default) will evenly distribute pixels, and higher values will distribute pixels closer to the maximum radius. Previously, the randomization would be reset every time you changed one of the property sliders. Now you can modify the effect in a more stable way and only re-randomize when you want to. Effects -> Distort -> Pixelate now lets you specify a Scale Down and a Scale Up mode (pixelation is implemented by first scaling the image down, and then scaling it back up). This allows you to fine-tune the look of the effect for what you want to achieve. Effects -> Distort -> Polar Inversion now runs on the GPU which has greatly improved its performance, and it has improved rendering quality. Effects -> Distort -> Tile Reflection now runs on the GPU, has improved rendering quality, and an Edge Behavior property which can produce some really interesting results. Effects -> Distort -> Twist now renders on the GPU and has improved rendering quality. Effects -> Noise -> Add Noise now runs on the GPU and has a Randomize button. It will not re-randomize on every property change like it used to. Effects -> Photo -> Glow now runs on the GPU and is significantly faster. Effects -> Photo -> Sharpen was completely rewritten to produce much better results. It now has a Threshold slider. Effects -> Photo -> Soften Portrait now runs on the GPU and is significantly faster. Effects -> Photo -> Vignette now runs on the GPU and is significantly faster. Effects -> Render -> Clouds now has a large number of additional blend modes. Effects -> Render -> Julia Fractal and Mandelbrot Fractal now run on the GPU and are significantly faster. Depending on your CPU and GPU, you will see a performance improvement between 2x to 100x. You can also now choose a Blend Mode for these effects. Effects -> Render -> Turbulence now has a Blend Mode dropdown instead of a Blend checkbox. Effects -> Stylize -> Emboss now runs on the GPU and is significantly faster. Effects -> Stylize -> Edge Detect has been completely rewritten. Instead of an Angle property, it now has Strength and Blurring sliders, an Algorithm dropdown (Sobel or Prewitt), and an Overlay Edges checkbox. Miscellaneous There are a lot of smaller changes throughout the app as well: The Line/Curve tool has higher quality antialiasing, and a new Straight mode (in addition to Spline and Bezier). The Shapes tool has higher quality antialiasing as well. The brightness of the transparency checkerboard can now be configured in Settings. Thumbnails in the Layers window have been made larger by 20%, making them easier to see at a glance. IPTC metadata is now preserved. Plugins can also read/write IPTC metadata. Thanks to @null54 for implementing this! You can now click-and-hold on +/- buttons in the toolbar instead of repeatedly clicking on them. The selection is now rendered using the GPU, which helps with both performance and battery life. Effects now run at a higher, smoother framerate. Previously the screen was updated at a fixed 20 frames-per-second, but now these updates are done as soon as possible. On a fast system with a high-refresh rate monitor you will really see the difference. On non-English systems, Paint.NET will attempt to auto-localize the submenu names that effect plugins specify. For example: an Italian user will now see just a "Sfocature" sub-menu instead of both "Sfocature" and "Blurs". 32-bit CMYK images are now correctly imported. They are transformed to 32-bit BGRA sRGB and the color profile is removed. Thanks to Clinton Ingram @saucecontrol for suggesting and consulting on this. There has been significant optimization through the rendering engine to reduce and remove transient allocations. Most rendering code is now able to run completely free of allocations. The whole app feels smoother! (When I've run v4.3.12 and v5.0 side-by-side, the new version was noticeably smoother at updating the canvas.) The app has been updated to run on .NET 7, and all legacy C++/CLI code has been ported to C# with the help of Tanner Gooding's excellent TerraFX.Interop.Windows library. The bundled AvifFileType plugin has been updated to version 1.1.22.0 (thanks @null54!) System Requirements Windows 10 v1809+ or Windows 11 NOTE: Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1 are no longer supported. 64-bit CPU and 64-bit version of Windows Both Intel/AMD x64 and ARM64 are natively supported. NOTE: 32-bit x86 is no longer supported. Optional: A pen or drawing tablet that supports Windows Ink Recommended: A CPU that supports AVX2, which includes most CPUs released since 2013. Note that AVX2 is not required, but it helps performance quite a bit. A discrete GPU such as an NVIDIA GeForce, AMD Radeon, or Intel Arc or an AMD Radeon APU (a type of integrated GPU) or an Intel Iris Plus or Iris Xe integrated GPU The GPU must support Direct3D 11. Otherwise the CPU will be used for rendering, which will have much lower performance. An Intel HD or UHD iGPU also works, but the default quality used across the app (e.g. in distortion effects and the Move Selected Pixels tool) will automatically be lowered in order to improve performance. Get the Update There are two releases of Paint.NET 5.0: Microsoft Store release (recommended) You can purchase it here. This helps fund development and is an alternative or supplement to sending in a donation. If you already have it installed, the update should happen automatically once Microsoft certifies the update, usually within the next day or two. To get the update immediately (once it's certified), you can follow the instructions listed here. Classic Desktop release Download the installer directly (web installer for all supported CPUs and OSes). This is the recommended download if you don't have Paint.NET installed. It can also be used to update the app. If you already have it installed, you should be offered the update automatically within the next week or so, but you can also get it immediately by going to ⚙ Settings -> Updates -> Check Now. Offline Installers and Portable ZIPs are available over on GitHub. * Pressure sensitivity was removed in v3.5, back in 2009, due to various technical issues with its implementation and lack of suitable hardware to test on. ** The only effects/adjustments that do not yet run on the GPU are: Auto-Level, Curves, Levels, Oil Painting, Surface Blur, Unfocus, Quantize, Median, Reduce Noise, Red Eye Removal, and Outline *** Not literally. It will not damage your GPU, it just requires a lot of processing power.

  13. NEW! Load and Save are supported!!! Planetoid creates realistic 3D planets, or 2D maps at the touch of a button. There is more however. Much more. You can configure the heavens (well - clouds actually) and the earth. You can move mountains, deforest entire continents and generally indulge your megalomania. Here's a sample of what you can create using the default settings Nice eh? The plugin itself will run under either Paint.NET 3.5.11 or 4.0.x so no one needs to miss out on the fun. To install the plugin, download my Plugin Pack and unzip it. Run the *.exe installer (written by BoltBait). Restart paint.net. You'll find Planetoid under the Effects > Render submenu. I'm not going to explain the UI here, because you'll find a HELP file built right into the last tab in the UI. See? Planetoid is a collaboration between myself and @TechnoRobbo. Honestly - I couldn't have done this without TR's help. Thanks mate. Thanks also to @Red ochre for his suggestions and comments. Technical: Planetoid uses Value Noise (incorrectly named Perlin Noise by many) to create landscapes by layering up a number of 'features' and compositing the results into a single layer. The resultant texture can be revealed as a rectangular (2D) map or wrapped around a sphere, with lighting, to create a very realistic looking planet. Original Value noise routines were stolen from Sepcot's website and were originally published by Hugo Elias. Ken Perlins aptly named Perlin Noise is actually quite different. Texture wrapping, lighting, custom animation, custom controls (and loads more!) by @TechnoRobbo. More planets and maps from Planetoid... Blue/Green Earth type planet Mars Gas Giant Barren Moon 2D Map (without clouds, naturally) Tips: 1. Rendering two different planets to separate layers then using a blend mode (like Color Dodge) can render some interesting textures Mars and Earth combined with color Dodge 2. Hiding all the layers Planetoid uses wraps the source layer around a sphere Planet paint.net 3. Careful use of tip #2 can yield some dramatic results!

  14. This tutorial is available as a PDF. Click here to view or download it @LionsDragon requested a tutorial on this after I posted an image in my gallery. @TrevorOutlaw made a comment that it needed more scattered 'air bubbles' and I agreed. So went my pursuit to see if I could accomplish it and make it better. We will be making this: Plugins needed: Dpy's AA's Assistant Built-in Noise Josh's Fuzzy Edge Detector Red's Tone Angle Gradient Pyrochild's Curves+ KrisVDM's Drop Shadow BoltBait's Inner Shadow Selection I'm using a shape that you can find in my shapepack, though any shape should work. I've tested it on a few. The shape is 'StainedGlass-Flower2'. Here is the zip file. Shape-Curves.zip Shape file (.xaml) goes into your shapes folder (ProgramFiles--->paint.net--->shapes). The (.xml) goes into your Curves+ folder (Documents--->paint.net user files--->Effect Presets--->Curves+) I'm using a canvas of 600 x 800. Draw your shape, outline only, in black at 4px. Add a new layer and color your shape pieces. Use magic wand at about 60% to select the pieces, go to new layer and fill with paint bucket any color of your choosing. Continue until all pieces are colored. ***USE SOLID COLORS ONLY! GRADIENTS WILL NOT WORK!*** Do (2) AA's Assistant (Effects--->Object). Untick outline layer. Duplicate your 'color pieces' layer. On the top layer Add Noise (Effects--->Noise--->Add Noise) It may look like you haven't done anything to the image, but you have. This is the basis for the 'air bubbles'. Still on the top layer, use Fuzzy Edge Detect at the settings below. (Effects--->Stylize) Still on the top layer, use Tone Gradient Angle at these settings. (Effects--->Stylize) Set top layer to multiply, opacity about 160. Then use Curves+ at these settings. (Adjustments--->Curves+) Merge top layer down onto layer 2, leaving outline layer untouched. On 'color piece' layer do Drop Shadow at these settings. (Effects--->Object) Duplicate the layer, set top layer to color burn, opacity about 75. Create a new layer on top. On outline layer, select with magic wand all your 'pieces' (magic wand-shift), then select your new layer and use Inner Shadow Selection at these settings. (Effects--->Selection) Deselect. At this point you may want to add layers for highlights and shading. Set the (2) layers between 'inner shadow selection' layer and your colored image. Add highlights and shading as desired. After applying, clean up the layers using the outline layer and magic wand. This great tip comes from @hippiechos and her great tutorial found here. If you want to add a little extra 'ompf' to your 'lead', move the outline to the top and make visible (check it). Use BoltBait's Bevel Object at approx. these settings. (Effects--->Object) Most of these plugin settings are very flexible. The only one that isn't is the Noise. If you add too much, you will just have a mess! Here are (2) quick examples of mandalas I made in an on-line generator. I colored them myself and applied most of the above steps, except the drop shadow for the 'lead', as they didn't have spaces between the pieces. It was thin black lines. Not bad, I think! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. I'd love to see what interesting 'stained glass' you can make! EDIT: Enlarged last two images

  16. Tone Gradient Angle (new July '17) Name: TGAngle (Tone Gradient Angle)* Description: Shows the relative angle of the tone gradient giving various emboss effects. Menu: Stylize Original release date: 10th July 2017 Author: Red ochre (John Robbins) .dll name: TGAngle Compatibility: Tested on Pdn3.5.11 and latest Pdn4 version. TGAngle.zip Firstly let me thank MJW! - I used the super-sampling techniques he showed me when writing 'Aardvark'. There are already similar effects available but the AAsmoothing and colouring blend choices should make this useful too. Run this on a layer with an image that has some variation in tone. The built-in 'Clouds' is good to test on. So are photographs but you will get better results if you resize the image to a reasonable size - say less than 1000 pixels (max side). Do try the metallic colouring options too!(These were designed to work with the colouring slider at halfway but do experiment). Hopefully you should see some screen shots below (image hosts permitting) that should give you some ideas. Please show me what you can create with it! *(Tone Gradient Magnitude gives good outline effects too - but I haven't finished writing that yet).

I'm active over in the 'Shapes' thread. Busily creating shapes and coloring a few in here and there. Our fellow member ScrapbookWithPDN made a wonderful snowglobe shape and I started tinkering with it. And suddenly, it took on a life of its own. I have many hours invested in this composition and I thought it would also look good animated. The picture is 99.9% PDN. The heart in the globe was made by me years ago, but in a different program. I started using PDN about eight years ago and I love it! Many thanks to all who have contributed to this wonderful, free software and the many plugins available. I'm also starting to get hooked on Midora's animation plugin...great stuff! And I can't say enough about Shapemaker. I hope you enjoy what I've created and I hope to be slowly adding to my gallery.

  21. This tutorial is available as a PDF. Click here to view or download it Hello everyone! Some people on my gallery thread wanted to know how I make the semi-pixel art style trees I have in my scenes, so I thought it'd be a fun and useful thing to make a tutorial out of, so without further or do, here's how to make some neat looking trees. You will need the following plugins to do this: Red Ochre's Dryad (required) Outline-Object by Pyrochild (required) Jitter by Pyrochild (optional) Setup/making the tree First off, start by creating a new canvas that is 800 x 600 in size, or however large you'd like, then press CTRL+A to select all and hit delete to remove the white background. Next up, let's make the actual tree! Here are the settings I've used in Red Ochre's Dryad: You should have something looking like this, some of the branches can droop pretty low to the ground, you can use the eraser to remove those branches if you'd like a more normal looking tree, or leave it if you want. Create a new layer underneath the tree layer and just set the background to white, then merge the two layers together. Next, go to Adjustments -> Brightness/Contrast or press CTRL+SHIFT+T and turn the contrast to 100. This will get rid of any alpha or AA colors. Shading your tree Now, it's time to shade the tree! You can do this a variety of ways, but here is how I do it, simply by using the magic wand tool. I set it's flood mode to global, and select all the white, then move the selection further and further to the bottom left of the tree, and fill in the trunks/branches with a paint bucket that is set to global fill, and gradually make it get darker as it gets lower. It's simple, but works. Here's a GIF showing how I do it: http://i.imgur.com/AWAqMHR.gif You should have something looking like this afterwards! This already could pass as a nice bare/winter tree. It even almost looks like it has branch "shadows" because of how we shaded it. It kind of looks like it belongs in a black and white noir film though. Let's add some color and detail. A simple Sepia tone (CTRL+SHIFT+E) will give it a nice brown color. I also recommend brightening it up a little bit with Brightness/Contrast (10-30+ brightness value) before rendering the sepia tone, just to make sure it isn't too dark, and also feel free to play with hue/saturation to tweak the coloring. Here's what it looks like now: Much better now! But the darkest tones look like they kind of clash with the bright tones, don't they? Let's fix that. Smoothing/feathering edges 1. Set your primary fill color to be 0% alpha, and then use the magic wand tool set to global select and select the darkest tone/color on the tree, then press Backspace on your keyboard to fill it in. 2. Now, switch your primary color to the now remaining darkest color/shade on your tree, like so: Next, go to Effects -> Object -> Outline-Object by Pyrochild. These are the settings I used, make sure to have Softness set to zero, this is to make sure there is no alpha pixels. You can repeat this step as many times as you'd like, with each new outlined shade being slightly darker than the last, or just fill in the remaining transparency with a slightly darker shade than the outline. Here is what it looks like now. Much smoother, eh? It helped fix some of the weirder looking parts of the tree. There are still some kind of errors near the middle/higher up, which you may want to correct by hand with the recolor tool or pencil tool, but I don't think it will really be noticeable when we are finished. Creating Leaves This is the fun part! While we have a very lovely bare/fall/winter tree, to really make it pop we should add some nice leaves to it. Paint.NET unfortunately does not have a spray tool, and I know deep down inside it will never have one. I usually do this process by hand in Microsoft Paint with the spray tool and use 1-3 shades, I just keep spraying around the branches for awhile, but for this tutorial we will use Paint.NET's Frosted Glass distortion effect. 1. Start by making a new layer on top of your tree layer, and just take the brush tool with hardness set to 0%, antialiasing disabled. Make some gray blobs over the branches, like so: 2. Use outline object with a 000 value black and make a thick outline around your shapeless leave blobs. Make it set to angled downward for realistic shadows. 3. Finally, fill in the background of your tree leaves layer with white. This is so we can separate the leaves from the background later on. 4. Now let's blur it! Go to Effects > Blurs > Gaussian Blur. It should look something like this: 5. Deselect the white area around it and render some colorless Noise over it. 6. Set the layer mode to Multiply temporarily. This is just so we can see how it looks over the tree. Scale the blob's size about 2/3 of what it was, and deselect it. 7. We're almost done now. Fill in the transparent area around the blob on it's layer with white, and then it's time to render the frosted glass over it. Go to Effects > Blurs > Frosted Glass and scatter that blob around! Here are the settings I used: 8. Duplicate your scattered layer and move it a bit to the right of canvas, maybe rotate it a bit, feel free to experiment. This step is just to make sure the tree gets extra leaf coverage. 9. Merge your top leaf layer with your bottom one and then go to Adjustments -> Posterize to cut down on the color count. Here are the settings I used: It's getting there! Time to clean up all the spare/floating pixels. Cleanup/coloring 1. Set your magic wand tool's flood mode to Global, and tolerance to 0%. Left click on the white space on your leaf layer, it might be a bit slow depending on the size of your tree/leaf amount, give it a minute to select the white, then hit delete to remove the whitespace. 2. Next, set your magic wand tool's mode back to Contiguous and click on the center most color/mass of leaves and slowly turn up the tolerance until it selects all of the non-transparent pixels that are connected together. Make sure it does not select the alpha/transparent space. Here is a GIF showing how I do it: GIF: http://i.imgur.com/NbAUylS.gif 3. Finally, press the copy button/CTRL + C to copy the leaf blob, and then press CTRL+A to select all and hit delete to delete the blob mass. Press CTRL + V/paste it back into the canvas and... Voila! It's cleaned! There are no more floating pixels. The best part about this method is, each and every single leaf is connected, and not all a blur of floating pixels, which is nice. 4. It's time to color in the leaves. Brighten them up a bit with brightness/contrast however you like, and then render an Adjustments -> Sepia over them. Then go to Adjustments -> Hue/Saturation and make them whatever color you'd like. Here's the settings I've used, feel free to play around with this step: Looks much more lively now, doesn't it? Extra cleanup on the branches 1. While you don't have to follow this step, this is something I like to do just for extra effect. Set your leaves layer back to "Normal" blend mode and select your tree layer. Get your magic wand tool out and set the flood mode to global and the tolerance to 0%, then set the selection mode to Subtract. Then hit CTRL+A to select all, and click on the white space in your tree layer, you should now have only your tree layer selected. 2. Now then, go back to your tree leaf layer, and select the transparent space on that layer too, you should now only have the branches selected over the mass of leaves. 3. Click back onto your tree layer, and hit CTRL+C to copy the branches. Create a new layer on top of the leaves and paste it on that layer. Set it to multiply, with a lowish opacity, around 50-150. Now it's more like they're shaded by the leaves, instead of the leaves just being overlayed on top of them. It's a small effect, but it makes a difference. 4. For another extra effect, let's add some shadows to the leafs. Again, small effect, but noticeable. Select all on your leaf layer and then click on the transparent space to select only the leaves, then move it downwards a little bit, like so: 5. Do the same thing like with the branches, and go back down to the tree layer and click on the white space so you only have the tree selected. 6. Finally, create a new layer over the tree and call it "Tree Shadows", then set your primary color to black and hit backspace to fill it in, and set it to multiply or overlay with a lowish alpha. You now have leaf shadows. I set my shadows to a kind of orangish sepia color (AF7D5B) for extra effect, and the layer to 145 on Multiply, as you can see there are some subtle shadows there now. Final (optional) Extra Effects Quick leaf shading This is one of the last/final effects I like to do, where I simply duplicate the leaves layer, render black and white, brighten it up with brightness/contrast, and then set it to overlay. It just adds a tiny bit more depth to the whole thing. Here's a GIF showing it: http://i.imgur.com/D7zawiS.gif Rendering a jitter on the branch shades Sometimes I feel like the tree itself is too perfect with the lighting, so I select a few tones of the tree trunk and render "Jitter" by Pyro Child, it helps break it up nicely. I then fill in the white pixels with second darkest shade, using the paint bucket. The final product! Here it is! A great big red cherry blossom! I hope this tutorial was helpful and wasn't too difficult to follow and you guys can use it to your advantage. You can use this method in many other ways too, like you can make desert shrubs or bushes for example, and other various foliage. Thank you for looking! Here's an example of a scene I've done that uses trees made with this method:

  23. Hello and Welcome I've been playing around with Paint.Net since early 2013. Some of my work is made from fantastic tutorials written by great artists. I may have a few photo manipulations but I credit the majority of my work to the friendly people who make up this forum. A special thanks to Rick for writing this awesome program. Please enjoy and you're welcome to give me your opinion (good or bad). TUTORIALS MESSIN' AROUND BUILDINGS I've been urged to post this video! I was looking for something to do and found Paint.Net. This video was my very first project, before I knew about plugins and before I knew there was a forum that could guide me. I took hundreds of pictures and included the model cars that I built years ago. First I made a gif and got bored with it so I made it into a movie and put in sound effects using Windows Movie Maker.

Which of my plugin packs is right for you? You need to look at the paint.net version number in the title bar. Classic: Download: 3.5.11 http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/8318-b 4.0.x You're in the right place. The download link is above, surrounded by blue arrows. 4.1+ https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/113220-boltbaits-plugin-pack Windows Store version of paint.net: https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/113220-boltbaits-plugin-pack New for this pack: This plugin pack now includes an installer. Download the zip file to your desktop, unzip it, and run the installer. Also, all plugins now include a help file. Once you run an effect, click the [?] button in the upper right corner of the effect's UI (near the red X button). Note: All plugins in this pack have been tested with Paint.NET v4.0.6 release AND the most current release. Once you install this plugin pack, here's what you get: Adjustments menu Color Balance Easily adjust the tint of an image. Useful for color correcting photographs taken indoors without flash. The difference between this and the built-in Hue/Saturation adjustment is that this one will affect black and white areas. Hue/Saturation+ Conditional Hue / Saturation effect. Temperature/Tint Temperature / Tint effect. Transparency Adjust the transparency of a selection just like you can adjust it for an entire layer. Effects menu Flip Horizontal - flips the selection on the vertical axis. Similar to the layer flip of the same name. Flip Vertical - flips the selection on the horizontal axis. Similar to the layer flip of the same name. Effects > Artistic menu Dream This makes your picture look like it was seen in a dream. + Oil Painting+ Makes your photographs look painted. Pastel This makes your picture look like it was drawn with pastel chalk or water color paint. Effects > Blurs menu Gaussian Blur Plus - With it, you can blur only the Red, Blue, Green, or Alpha channel of the image. It also allows you to blend the original picture with the blurred image. (Try blurring all channels of the image with a radius of 10 and a Darken blend mode. Cool stuff.) Effects > Fill From Clipboard Fills the current selection with the graphic on the clipboard. From File Fills the current selection with a graphic file. Effects > Object menu An "object" is a group of pixels on a layer that is completely surrounded by transparent pixels (or the edge(s) of the canvas). These are useful when doing "cutouts" or with text on a new layer. Bevel Object This effect allows you to make objects 3D. Works great with text! Feather This effect softens the edges of objects. Inner Shadow Renders a shadow on objects so they look like they have been cut out. Object Shadow Renders a shadow behind objects. OldFeather "True Feather" is back! So many people have asked for this that I'm bringing it back for this pack. Enjoy! Outline - This effect puts an outline of the selected color around your object. Paste Alpha - This effect takes the graphic on the clipboard and converts the colors to shades of gray and then uses that for the alpha values of the current layer. Useful for using masks. *UPDATED* Switch Alpha to Gray - This effect converts the image to shades of gray based on the alpha value of each pixel. Useful for making masks. Switch Gray to Alpha - This effect deletes white from and image and converts all other pixels to black. Useful for isolating line art. Effects > Photo menu Combined Adjustments Many adjustments for photographs all on one screen *UPDATED* Level Horizon Rotate an image by drawing a line across the horizon. http://www.BoltBait.com/pdn/img/MemeMaker.pngMeme Maker Create your own Memes. Remove Dust Removes little white dust particles by clone stamping them out. I find this very helpful when scanning photographs. Sharpen Landscape Makes your landscape photographs look like they belong in a magazine! Seam Carving - Horizontal Reduce the height of an image without scaling (squishing) the image. Seam Carving - Vertical Reduce the width of an image without scaling (squishing) the image. Vignette+ Extends the capabilities of the built-in Vignette effect with colors and the ability to render a vignette to a blank canvas. Effects > Render menu Polygon / Stars This effect allows you to render triangles, pentagons, hexagons, etc. It also allows you to render stars. It is useful in making standard shapes and the pointed edges of stickers. Flames This effect allows you to render flames. It is based on Tom Jackson's excellent fire tutorial. Gradients Render colorful HSV (rainbow) gradients. Grid / Checkerboard Create checker board or grid patterns. Effects > Selection menu Effects in this menu perform their effect by following the selection outline (marching ants). While they will work with a square selection (or no selection by using the edges of the canvas as their path), they are more interesting when the selection is curved , selected by hand , or by magic wand . Bevel Selection This effect allows you to make selections 3D. Works great with text! Blur Selection Edge - This effect feathers the edges of a selection using the surrounding colors instead of transparency. Useful when the selection is not surrounded by transparent pixels. Feather Selection This effect softens the edges of your selection. It works just like the feather in other graphic$ program$. Inner Shadow Selection Renders a shadow on the inside of a selection so it looks like it has been cut out. Outline Selection This effect allows you to outline a selection. Effects > Stylize menu Floyd-Steinberg Dithering This effect will reduce the colors of your image using the Floyd-Steinberg dithering technique. Window > Colors > More > Open Palettes Folder I have also included my Rainbow Palette. This is very popular on the forums. In the Color docker window, click the :ColorPalettes: button and choose Rainbow from the list. Custom Shapes This plugin pack also includes 45 custom shapes. This pack supersedes my plugins available elsewhere. I will be updating the other locations eventually, but if you want the latest versions, download my plugins from this post. Enjoy. Post on this thread and tell me what your favorite plugin is.

  27. @Woodsy rediscovered this excellent tutorial while archiving tuts to PDF. I was so taken with the effect I wrote a plugin to make it easier to create a very similar effect. I know this is similar to Ed Harvey's Weave, but that seems to be non-functional in PDN 4.0+ The UI: Download the DLL >> WovenPhoto94.zip After installing, you'll find it in the Effects >Texture Demos: Run it twice with different sizes for some interesting overlays... Download it here for the time being. I'll put it in my Plugin Pack soonish.

  28. This tutorial is available as a PDF. Click here to view or download it Make A Gold Encased Bottle As requested, here is a tutorial on making gold over a bottle. For my Bling Perfume Bottle I used the Circle Text Plugin to make the letters and shapes, as seen at the beginning of Barbieq's Jewel Tutorial here. For this tutorial I've kept it a little simpler by using another method. Here is the end result. Plugins used: Metalize, AA's Assistant Align Object Alpha Mask Gradient Mapping Hexagonal Grid WhichSymbolPlus Bevel Selection Sarkut's Gold Gradient XML is at the bottom of the tutorial. After you have downloaded the XML at the bottom of the tutorial Copy/paste the XML into this folder: "C:\Users\<"Username">\Documents\Paint.NET User Files\Effect Presets\Gradient Mapping" Begin with an Image size of 3500 x 3500. A larger canvas gives a nicer result, but do remember to save often during the process. On the background layer make a B&W Gradient. New Layer. With the Rectangle Select Tool draw a rectangle on the canvas and fill it with a Linear Blue (0094FF) & White gradient. Align lower center, but move it up a little to leave a space below. (Optional - you can use Frosted Glass if you like). Duplicate this layer and save one for later, for the bottle top - uncheck it for now. Make a New Layer above the Bottle layer. Use the Rectangle Select Tool to draw another rectangle so that it extends slightly over the edges. With yellow color FFD800, fill it with a Hexagonal Grid - with center boxes checked - Size horizontal = 100 and use the brush size at about #15. This will be called the 'Mask Layer'. This will be the method used to 'mask' and make the Gold, which will be repeated throughout the tutorial at certain intervals. 1. Gaussian Blur the Yellow Hex lines at strength #1. 2. Copy the Mask layer into the clipboard. On your keyboard, press: Ctrl + A Ctrl + C Ctrl + D This will select All of the layer, Copy the selection into the Windows clipboard, and Deselect. Make the Mask layer not visible. (Once you've finished the 10 steps, below, you can erase the mask layer). Position a new layer below the Mask layer, and use the rectangle select to make a rectangle slightly larger than the bottle & fill it with a vertical linear gradient of Hex C0C0C0 to Hex A0A0A0. Name the layer 'Bottle Mesh'. Remember to save your work periodically as this large canvas can slow things down. 3. Apply Alpha Mask with all checkboxes filled. Don't panic if your see nothing at first, as the lines will be rather faint. 4. DuplicateLayer: and merge this layer 2 - 3 times to get a good outline. (Remember - keep saving your work) 5. With the Shift key down, Magic Wand the alpha outside the Hex's, and invert selection. (Check your tolerance bar for the correct strength in order to select the boxes correctly.) Make a new layer above the Hex's and apply Bevel Selection with "Keep original image" UN-checked. 6. Deselect and Gaussian blur @ 4 radius. 7. Merge Layer Down Beveled layer to the Hex layer . Duplicate the resulting layer twice. 8. Apply Color - Metalize - Type3 to the top Layer, Type2 to the middle & Type1 to the lower layer. 9. Set the middle and top layers to Negation blend mode. 10. Gaussian Blur all three Hexagon layers @ Gaussian Blur x 2 radius. Merge Layer Down to the middle Hex layer & then down to the bottom Hex layer Apply AA's Assistant at default settings. Use Gradient Mapping to colorize. Or, if you want to leave it silver/Chrome ....... stop here. Be sure to have the Preserve Alpha box checked. You can also use the Brightness / Contrast to give more shine. Align your work. New Layer. Use Shape to Draw a 'Rounded Rectangle Outline', in yellow, with brush size #20 to 'encase' the bottle. Then repeat Steps 1 - 10 to get a gold outline around the bottle! It may be easier to see if you make the previous Gold Layer invisible (uncheck the layer) as you work with the outside. You can then merge the Gold Outline layer with the Gold Mesh. Align your work. Use Brightness / Contrast to lighten the Gold. Note: You can stop here or continue to make an Emblem for the center. New Layer - I made the triangle with @EER's WhichSymbolPlus Plugin and Windings2. Resize the Symbol to fit. Then repeat steps 1 - 10 for gold. At the Bevel Selection step - increase the bevel to #10. Then go to the mesh layer and erase some of the Hex's in the middle of the bottle. At this point make sure to Align your work. * (You could, at this point, flatten the image here and duplicate the bottle & resize it to make the lid. However, it doesn't look as good as making a new one ..... as per below.) Resize the Duplicated Bottle layer to a square - for the top of the bottle. Align work. Leave a gap between the top and bottom of the bottle for a metal rim. New Layer - with rectangle select, make a small rectangle and fill with a black & white gradient. Gaussian Blur at #2. No need to make a gold mask, just go to Gradient Mapping and use Sarkut's Gold again and play with the slider to get a nice shine. Also you can use Brightness & Contrast to lighten it further if needed. Select the bottle top with the magic wand (use a low tolerance, or use the Rectangle Select if it won't select) and make a New Layer. Repeat making the Hex's in yellow, but a smaller size (80) for the gold. Also add a rounded rectangle to this layer as well, instead of doing it in two steps. Duplicate the Emblem, move the layer up to the top & resize it over the bottle lid & erase some Hex's on the gold mesh layer like before. Here I usually delete the background layer, flatten and resize the bottle by 25% and then save to .png. Then I re-upload it into Paint.net and scale it down again then duplicate it, flip it vertically, move it down and use the Gradient, in Transparency Mode, to get a shadow and lower the opacity and save again. Also, when I made my Bling Bottle I duplicated the gold layers, turned the lower one to black with the Brightness / Contrast knobs pulled to the left and used them for a little shadow. If you've made it this far you will probably be sick of making Gold If you have trouble downloading Sarkut's XML at the bottom of this tutorial you can also still find it on his old tute in the Graveyard found here. 29. This update improves performance and fixes a lot of small issues. As usual, you can download the update directly from the website, or you can use the built-in updater via Settings –> Updates –> Check Now. This is a minor update in the sense that it’s mostly a basket full of fixes and improvements. To me it feels like a larger release though While it doesn’t have any new features, it’s fixing and cleaning out a whole bunch of longstanding things that I’ve wanted to tackle for awhile. I’ve been chipping away at things pretty steadily since the release of 4.0.16, so this really is about 3 full months worth of fixes and improvements! At Microsoft we would’ve called this an “MQ” (Milestone Quality) release. For instance, the animation timer in version 4.0.16 runs at 120Hz. Always. The Win32 APIs for correctly detecting the monitor’s refresh rate are such a maze. They are archaic, bizarre, and the documentation is barely satisfactory. For this release I finally took the time to figure it all out and get the timer to run at the monitor’s actual refresh rate (it also works if you move the window across monitors with different refresh rates). I’m thinking of writing a blog post about it, in fact, because I don’t think anyone else should have to deal with that ever again. It sounds like it should be so simple, but there are always peculiarities and ambiguities that can trip things up. Not too surprisingly, this improves performance if you’re opening a lot of images: the image strip up at the top of the window uses several animations and it really gets bogged down, but now it’s actually much faster. This should also help battery life for laptop users (it won’t change things much for my new overclocked i9-7900X ). Also, there are a handful of bugs in Windows and Direct2D that this release is working around. The “Creators Update” for Windows 10 includes the .NET Framework 4.7 and they totally broke the way mouse cursors work for WinForms in high-DPI situations. The result was that 4.0.16 has some really ugly mouse cursors if you’re running at anything other than 100% scaling (aka 96 DPI). So I spent a bunch of time to work around that and write completely custom cursor loading code, which also came with the bonus of providing me with new control over how this whole system works within Paint.NET. The Win32 cursor system is an old, archaic, weird system, one that’s made worse by the various wrappers which are built on top of it (e.g. WinForms or WPF). Now I’ve got the ability to provide high resolution and high color cursors. I can do pretty much anything with them now, and would like to upgrade the Win95-era cursors in a future release. Also, I’ve implemented a “portable mode” that I’ll be describing in a follow-up post. It redirects the app’s settings into a local JSON file instead of having them in the registry. I know there are at least a handful of people who’ve been hoping for something like this for a long time – now your USB key can carry your personal settings with you from computer to computer. Next up for Paint.NET: Windows Store! Once that’s done, I’m planning to upgrade the brushes system. It desperately needs more built-in brush shapes, as well as the ability to install custom ones. Anyway, without further ado, here’s the change list! Added: "Fluid mouse input" option in Settings -> UI -> Troubleshooting. If you see major glitches while drawing, try disabling this. Improved: Default brush size, font size, and corner radius size now scales with major DPI scaling levels (brush size of 2 at 100% scaling, brush size of 4 at 200% scaling, etc.) Improved: Default image size now scales with major DPI scaling levels (800x600 at 100%, 1600x1200 at 200%, etc.) Improved performance and drawing latency by removing explicit calls to System.GC.Collect() except when low memory conditions are encountered Improved performance by greatly reducing object allocation amplification by reducing the concurrency level when using ConcurrentDictionary, and by removing WeakReference allocations in favor of direct GCHandle usage Improved: Performance and battery usage by ensuring animations always run at the monitor's actual refresh rate Improved (reduced) CPU usage when moving the mouse around the canvas Removed: "Hold Ctrl to hide handle" from the Text tool because it was not useful and caused lots of confusion Fixed: Various high-DPI fixes, including horrible looking mouse cursors caused by a bug in the latest .NET WinForms update Fixed: Gradient tool no longer applies dithering "outside" of the gradient (in areas that should have a solid color) Fixed: Very slow performance opening the Effects menu when lots of plugins are installed after installing the Windows 10 Creators Update Fixed: When cropping and then performing an undo, the scroll position was totally wrong Fixed a rendering glitch in the Save Configuration dialog (it would "wiggle") Fixed: At certain brush sizes, the brush indicator on the canvas had a visual glitch in it due to a bug in Direct2D Fixed: Text tool buttons for Bold, Italics, Underline were not localized for a few languages Fixed a rare crash in the taskbar thumbnails Fixed: Drawing with an aliased brush and opaque color (alpha=255) sometimes resulted in non-opaque pixels due to a bug in Direct2D's ID2D1RenderTarget::FillOpacityMask Fixed: "Olden" effect should no longer cause crashes (it still has some rendering artifacts due to its multithreading problems, however) New: Portable mode can be enabled via a setting in the .exe.config, which will redirect app settings into a local JSON file (see blogpost for details: https://blog.getpaint.net/2017/07/21/portable-mode-in-paint-net-4-0-17/ ) Enjoy!

  30. The Plugin Browser by The Dwarf Horde This is an official continuation of the excellent Plugin Browser originally put together by @TechnoRobbo, @Red ochre, @BoltBait, and @Ego Eram Reputo. ~~~~~ The Plugin Browser was designed to make installed plugins easier to locate and identify, especially when a large collection of plugins is installed. The Plugin Browser does this by allowing the User to search alphabetically by plugin name, keyword(s), author or menu location. Included in these searches are the Plugin Title and Description. Once you find a plugin, you can run it right from inside of the Plugin Browser. The Plugin Browser gives the User the ability to Bookmark their favorite plugins and add their comments to bookmarked plugins so they can identify it and make notes about its use. As well as being a search tool, the Plugin Browser is capable of displaying an embedded image which we call the Sample Image. The idea of the Preview Image is to give the User a visual clue to the plugin’s function. In most cases the Sample Image will be an example of the effect or adjustment. The Plugin Browser can also suggest plugins that you don't have but may want to download. Once a month the Plugin Browser downloads a copy of the Plugin Index. This file is used to match keyword searches against plugins by parsing the plugin descriptions from the Index. The Dwarf Horde Rob Tauler (TechnoRobbo) - Code Lead, Design John Robbins (Red Ochre) - Graphics Lead, Design Scott Stringer (Ego Eram Reputo) - Documentation Lead, Design David Issel (BoltBait) - Beta Testing, Design Foreword The ShapeMaker plugin is a tool which facilitates the creation of SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) Shapes, Lines and Curves. The tool itself uses a WYSIWYG interface where Lines, Curves and entire Paths can be created and manipulated using just the mouse. Knowledge of the complex SVG structure is not required. ShapeMaker will create all that complex stuff for you and generate the Shape, code, or a complete reusable file. Why did we write this plugin? We wanted to create an easy-to-use click-and-drag interface which could create custom Shapes that paint.net itself could reuse via the new Shapes tool. That's right. Paint.net 4.0.6+ allows the user to add their own Shapes to the Shapes tool set. Not only can ShapeMaker Shapes be reused, the valid SVG generated can be pasted into HTML documents for modern browsers to render. We hope you like ShapeMaker! 37. Here is what I consider my "Essential", award winning , plugin pack for Paint.NET v4.2.12 and beyond. It includes 46 plugins in 36 files, 1 palette file, and 48 shapes. This allows you to pick and choose to install only the effects you want. Then, later you can run the installer and uncheck an item to uninstall it. When you see in this post, you can click it for more information (including source code in some cases). To install, download this file to your Desktop, unzip it, and run the install program. Note: This is an older version of my plugin pack for paint.net v4.2.12. For the most recent version, go here: https://forums.getpaint.net/BoltBaitPluginPack Download Donate I'm going through a really tough financial time right now, so anything you can spare would be much appreciated. Which of my plugin packs is right for you? You need to look at the Paint.NET version number in the title bar. Classic: Download: 3.5.11 https://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/8318-b 4.0.x https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/32048-b 4.2.12+ Download above 4.3.10+ https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/120037-b Windows Store version of paint.net: You're in the right place! Click the download button above When you see the main screen (shown below), select the "I'm running the store version of Paint.NET" checkbox. Installer / Plugin Manager: Once you click the download button above and open the zip file, run the included install.exe file. You'll see this: When the installer first runs, it updates the check boxes to what's currently installed (checked for installed, unchecked for not installed). However, if nothing is installed, it automatically checks ALL the boxes figuring the user would like to install everything. Carefully review each line and make sure the items you wish to install are checked. When you click the Install button, checked items will be installed and unchecked items will be uninstalled from your system. For high volume network managers: Plugin Manager has a silent install function... for more information: C:\> install /? New for this pack: I have gone through all of my plugins and redesigned the User Interface (UI) for each with the goal of making the UI dialog box shorter. With shorter UI's, less of your image will be covered by the effect UI while you're working on it. For example, here is a comparison of the previous version of Gradient (left) and the new version (right): I have always been a fan of shorter UI's and in this pack I take advantage of some new functionality in Paint.NET v4.2 that allows for a more compressed look. Help: If you need help with an individual effect, look for the question mark "?" in the top right corner of the effect UI (near the X) and click it. Once you install this plugin pack, here's what you get: Adjustments menu Black and White+ Use selected method for converting a color photograph into B&W. Color Balance Easily adjust the tint of an image. Useful for color correcting photographs taken indoors without flash. The difference between this and the built-in Hue/Saturation adjustment is that this one will affect black and white areas. Combined Adjustments All of your favorite adjustments on one screen. Oil Painting+ Makes your photographs look painted. Outline - This effect puts an outline of the selected color around your object. Paste Alpha - This effect takes the graphic on the clipboard and converts the colors to shades of gray and then uses that for the alpha values of the current layer. Useful for using masks. Switch Alpha to Gray - This effect converts the image to shades of gray based on the alpha value of each pixel. Useful for making masks. Switch Gray to Alpha - This effect deletes white from and image and converts all other pixels to black. Useful for isolating line art. Effects > Photo menu Combined Adjustments Many adjustments for photographs all on one screen Level Horizon Rotate an image by drawing a line across the horizon. Meme Maker Create your own Memes. Remove Dust Removes little white dust particles by clone stamping them out. I find this very helpful when scanning photographs. Sharpen Landscape Makes your landscape photographs look like they belong in a magazine! Seam Carving - Reduce height Reduce the height of an image without scaling (squishing) the image. Seam Carving - Reduce width Reduce the width of an image without scaling (squishing) the image. Vignette+ Extends the capabilities of the built-in Vignette effect with colors and the ability to render a vignette to a blank canvas. Effects > Render menu Calendar Render a monthly calendar. Month name and Days of the week are localized. Includes many options. Charts and Graphs Like a mini spreadsheet, enter your data and plot a graph! Dimensions This doesn't measure anything. It just renders the dimension arrows and label text. Flames This effect allows you to render flames. It is based on Tom Jackson's excellent fire tutorial. Gradients Render colorful HSV (rainbow) gradients. Grid / Checkerboard Create checker board or grid patterns. Polygon / Stars This effect allows you to render triangles, pentagons, hexagons, etc. It also allows you to render stars. It is useful in making standard shapes and the pointed edges of stickers. Effects > Text formations Creative Text Pro Creates professional looking 3D text. Outlined / Gradient text Creates text that is outlined with a selected color and filled with a solid color or a gradient. User "xod" has published a version of this plugin with even more features. If you find that my plugin isn't enough, install his. Window > Colors > More > Open Palettes Folder I have also included my Rainbow Palette. This is very popular on the forums. In the Color docker window, click the button and choose Rainbow from the list. This is what the Rainbow Palette looks like: Custom Shapes This plugin pack also includes 48 custom shapes. In the installer, you can pick-and-chose which ones you want. This pack supersedes my plugins available elsewhere. I will be updating the other locations eventually, but if you want the latest versions, download my plugins from this post. Enjoy. Also, for you luddites that refuse to use the installer, here's a zip file with all the DLL's in it: BoltBaitPack51DLLs.zip How to install Paint.NET plugins. BoltBaitPack51.zip

  39. This is a small update that enables dark themed title bars ("immersive dark mode"), and updates the built-in DDS and WebP plugins. The upcoming 4.4 update has had the code for "immersive dark mode" working for several months, and since it's proven to work and be stable, I thought this was a good opportunity to bring it over to 4.3.x so everyone can enjoy it much sooner Previously you'd either get a white titlebar, which just looks bad when Dark Theme is enabled, or you'd get the accent color defined in the Windows Color Settings (I like blue myself). NOTE for Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and 32-bit/x86 users: Paint.NET v4.3.x will be the last release(s) that work on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or on any 32-bit/x86 version of Windows. It has become significantly more difficult and time consuming to support these lately, not very many people are using them, and I can no longer justify the cost and frustration of keeping support for these afloat. Starting with Paint.NET v4.4, only Windows 10 and 11+ will be supported, and only on 64-bit (x64 and ARM64). Updates for 4.3.x will be released on an as-needed basis until v4.4 is completed. Get the update Microsoft Store release You can purchase it here. This helps fund development and is an alternative or supplement to sending in a donation. If you already have it installed, the update should happen automatically once Microsoft certifies the update, usually within the next day or two. To get the update immediately (once it's certified), you can follow the instructions listed here. Classic Desktop release Download the installer directly (web installer for all CPUs and OSes). 41. Recently I took a picture of a deer standing next to my garage: Unfortunately, the deer was slightly out of focus and the ground is also blurry. In order to fix the photograph, I did a TON of research and I came up with the best way to sharpen a blurry photograph. I will now share my technique with you. Here are the absolute best steps to sharpen a photograph: Step 1: Take another photograph. Make sure the object is in focus this time. If possible, use a tripod to hold the camera still. Results: As you can see, the deer is now in focus and the ground is no longer blurry. You may think that using the "Photo > Sharpen" effect will fix blurry photographs and it will to a small degree. However, you can trust me for I have done the research: the absolute BEST way to sharpen a blurry photograph is to take another photograph! Just be sure to hold the camera still, increase your aperture setting, and focus properly this time. I hope this tutorial helps you.

Keywords: artistic, watercolour, oilpaint, pastels, pencils, crayon, sketch, outlines, craquelure, drawing, textures Menu: Effects/Artistic Original release date: 3rd February 2016 Author: Red ochre (John Robbins) .dll name: ArtyThing Compatibility: tested on Pdn 3.5.11 and Pdn 4.0.9 Artything is now in my new v10 pack here: Red ochre plugin pack v10 I wouldn't advise using it on images larger than 1000 pixels square and do be careful when increasing the repetitions, length and stride controls. I do advise saving all work before running it as some combinations of image and settings can cause it to take a very long time. However it is reasonably quick when used correctly. There are many examples below that will hopefully give you some ideas on how to use it. The more complex results (without the settings shown) are where I have run it on multiple copies of the original image in layers. Tip: Using the surface blur or Gaussian blur beforehand often gives good results. Please post your results in this thread... I haven't fully explored what it can do yet, so would love to see what you can come up with! http://i.imgur.com/jj8AflC.png http://i.imgur.com/x0FgdDa.png http://i.imgur.com/bMrVMyJ.png http://i.imgur.com/cXZRpJa.png http://i.imgur.com/2tjkmEE.png http://i.imgur.com/t9DoKV9.png http://i.imgur.com/el7M30z.png http://i.imgur.com/91BzgHv.png http://i.imgur.com/0zxQt2U.png http://i.imgur.com/lbI1p0t.png http://i.imgur.com/hBxJrEg.png http://i.imgur.com/uaDGVn3.png http://i.imgur.com/Tg3lQOw.png http://i.imgur.com/G7fee0F.png http://i.imgur.com/zh3u9Sd.png http://i.imgur.com/o11jsuS.png http://i.imgur.com/rzkmB1e.png http://i.imgur.com/o5KJaVO.png http://i.imgur.com/Ti6XI1J.png http://i.imgur.com/lsUAR1J.png http://i.imgur.com/OxGB49k.png http://i.imgur.com/147CMml.png http://i.imgur.com/eo9rpku.png http://i.imgur.com/LPbWiRu.png http://i.imgur.com/VfgvX7g.png http://i.imgur.com/MD2MSYT.png

  44. Tone Gradient Magnitude (new July '17) Name: TGMagnitude (Tone Gradient Magnitude) Description: Shows the magnitude of the tone gradient giving various outline effects. Menu: Stylize Original release date: 22nd July 2017 Author: Red ochre (John Robbins) .dll name: TGMagnitude Compatibility: Tested on Pdn3.5.11 and latest paint.net4 version (4.0.17). TGMagnitude.zip The code for this is closely related to TGAngle and also makes use of MJW's ideas (Thanks again!). It creates outlines in proportion to the change in tone, giving results superficially similar to the Artistic effects 'Ink sketch' and 'Pencil sketch'. I have added the ability to lower the background opacity, hopefully making it useful as a mask to isolate objects. This also means you can place any background you wish on a layer below. I've had good results using it on photos but if you find other uses please do post. My example images should be below and I'd love to see what you can make using it.

  45. Name:Poster Description:Posterizes an image using the average colours in the image. Keywords:Posterize|Pleasantville effect|Flat colour|color|Tone|Saturation|Hue|Simplify Menu: Composition* Original release date:28th October 2016 Author: Red ochre (John Robbins) .dll name: Poster Compatability:Tested on Pdn 3.5.11 and Pdn 4.0.12 Now in my 10.1 pack Red ochre plugin pack V 10.1 This effect analyzes the BGR values within a selection, sorts them into bands by my own definition of Hue, saturation and Tone. Averages the values, then recolours the image. It works within rectangular selections or the whole canvas but the averages may not be correct for irregular selections... use objects instead if this is an issue as fully transparent areas are not included in the averages. I have used a simple BGR cube colour space model to calculate hue, saturation and tone, not the Pdn definitions for H,S,V. The total number of separate colours is given by multiplying the numbers for each of the sliders. Eg. 4 hues, 4 saturations and 4 tones = a maximum of 64 colours. Now, if only one hue band is selected, one saturation band and 10 tones, the image will be composed of 10 colour bands which depend upon the colours in the image. So if all the dark colours are reds and the light colours are blues, the tone bands will not be monochrome! This can be used for a faux 'Pleasantville' effect for some images. * I have decided to create a new SubMenu name 'Composition'. The other relevant sub-menus are overcrowded and I intend to add other relevant effects to this category. As always, the best way to learn is by experiment. My examples are below and please do post your example images in this thread too! .

  46. Hi all! I'm an author who is super-duper slow with writing due to two young children and a full-time job on top of that, but I'm making my way toward "The End". One of the things they say for self-publishers is don't design your own covers, but I'm cheap and I enjoy creating art and I decided to anyways. My covers have seen many stages, from playing around with the twist tool in paint.net to get my base symbols, to the final product they are now. Everything I know about graphic design has been self-taught through tutorials and getting input from other people as to what works and what doesn't. Only Thanmir War and This World Bites are published, so I'm willing to take suggestions on any of the other covers. Sovereign has given me the most issues with finding something that I like, but I finally settled on what I have because it fits the tone of the story best. The four Ninier book covers were created solely in paint.net, using the various tutorials found around such as making a stone texture, making 3-D stone text, cracked floor effect, and realistic rough cast metal. This World Bites was put together in paint.net, with the world pictured made using paint.net's advanced planet tutorial. I also fell in love with this water tutorial, and found inverting the colors made for a pretty fire background. My attempts at digitally painting my characters: My Book Covers: A just-because experiment to test the realistic rough cast tutorial: Other cover options I tried but rejected: Back from 2012:

  49. This tutorial is available as a PDF. Click here to view or download it A few fellow forum members suggested I make a tutorial after giving shading tips on a different thread. No plug-ins needed. This will work on colored images as well to accent the highlights and shadows, but I tend to play with it the most on my sketches. First, start with your base image. Add a new layer for shadows and set the Blending Mode to Color Burn Add another layer for highlights and set the Blending Mode to Color Dodge Using a dark gray on the Dodge layer, color where you want highlights. The lighter the color, the brighter the highlight. If it looks too bright, try a darker color. Black will probably not show up at all. I like to lower the hardness of the brush to get a softer edge to help with blending later. If you want distinct highlights, you can try a harder brush. Using a light gray on the Burn layer, color where you want shadows. The darker the color, the deeper the shadows. Use Gaussian Blur to smooth out the shadows. Play with the slider to see what works best for your image. Do the same to the highlights. Using the eraser tool, clean up the edges of the highlights and shadows so they don't creep beyond the borders of your image. If you find a section that needs a bit more adjustment, you can color where needed, use the selection tool to choose just that area, and then blur again to smooth it out. Another option is to reduce the hardness of your brush and adjust the opacity to make it slightly transparent, if you want just a subtle change. And then, you're done! You can adjust the opacity of the Dodge and Burn layers if the highlights and shadows are too bright/dark. This same technique on a colored photo (done quickly for this tutorial, not because my daughter needed any dramatization to her face):
