Recommended Posts

Right click on image, select "Edit" will edit with Paint.net instead of MS Paint.

I checked in registry that my default editor is still windows Paint.

I guest that it is Paint.net has replace the "Edit" of the right click..... so that's why registry cant help....

Split this into it's own topic so it doesn't get confused with the other question.

I, myself, have been curious about this for some time. While I have no intention of changing my default image editor back to MSPaint, it has concerned me that there is not option within Paint.net to do this.

I have also confirmed the above. The registry key is not changed, yet Paint.net is still the default image editor, making it impossible, as far as I can tell, to change it back to MSPaint.

This changes the default viewer. Here, we are discussing how to change the program that opens the file when you right-click and click "Edit"

I would expect that the perceived type 'image' is still associated to paint.net.

So check with regedit

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\shell\edit\command

Set (Default) to "C:\Windows\System32\mspaint.exe" "%1"

Those are the steps I expected to take, but that reg key is already set to mspaint.

The registry keys Paint.NET changes are:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile\shell\edit\command

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pngfile\shell\edit\command

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Paint.Picture\shell\edit\command

For JPEG, PNG and BMP files respectively.
